I would avoid the car if it doesn't have records.
I just bought my 2nd E30, a 1988 325ic with extensive service and repair records, and the piece of mind knowing what has been replaced and how well the car has been taken care of is priceless, and it reflects on how concientous the PO was about the car.
I know what to expect and when, as well as when I will have to do the T-Belt, and what I won't have to do anytime soon.
I can pretty much figure out how much I'm going to have to spend on the car in the next few years, barring the unforeseeable.
Also, if the PO didn't bother to document repairs and service, the odds are that the car wasn't well taken care of, or that the basics were flat out not done.
E30's with the 5 spd trans. will run forever, but they can be pretty unforgiving if neglected.
Odds are, you'll be getting a car that will need a lot done, all at once, which will be expensive.
Keep looking - there are plenty of cars out there with documented history's.
Nothing is more expensive than a cheap BMW that hasn't been taken care of.
You will have to service the T-Belt right off the bat, at a cost of around $500.00 if you're not going to DIY, if you don't know when it was last done.
Otherwise, you're gambling with your engine every time you start the car.
Not worth it.
