    LCD Touchscreen Q's

    Ho-kay, I am wanting a 16X9 touchscreen monitor, about 8".

I want normal XVGA and USB.

Anyone know of anything on the market?

Any ideas on where to find such a thing?

    I have googled, found nothing.

    Luke

Pretty much all the guys doing car pc's these days use Lilliput screens for their installs, i'd imagine they're quite nice quality wise for that reason. I used to be big into the carpc scene but never got aroudn the funding to do my own project. haven't read the forums there in a few years now so I don't know exactly whats the good stuff these days. Mp3car is pretty much the definitive site for it though

Lilliput doesn't make a 16:9 8". There is a 16:9 8" out there that is branded by a few companies for more money but the exact same screen is sold by Mp3Car under their own brand name for the best price by quite a bit. It's bright, great viewing angle and everyone I know who has it has had no problems, but I've been out of the loop for a few months so double check.

EDIT: nmind, told ya I'm out of the loop. They do make one now, and MP3Car sells it for the same price as their own (which they don't stock now, guess they're gonna stop making it)

A buddy of mine has a broken-screen laptop and a car charger for it that will not work on his new one.

2.8"m", 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD. SHould make a decent "Mobile Pornograph" and media center.

$260 for the screen looks OK to me.

Now I gotta sell the Kenwood screen I already have. Wish I could make it XVGA/USB instead of proprietary.

Consider building a real carputer. Laptop bases are too big to hide efficiently and they don't use a 12V supply. You'll need to route the carcharger and all that crap.

A proper carputer is small enough to easily hide in the dash or in the glovebox and with the right regulated 12V supply will also power the LCD safely. Without it you will need to buy or build your own regulator because the voltage from the alternator varies a lot (undervolt on startup and potentially huge overvolt when running - enough to fry the LCD).

I agree on all points, but Free Laptop > spending my few dollars on carputer.

The lilliput is intended for autmotive use, so it should be fine with the fluctuations of voltage it is gonna see.

Lilliput FTL. I have personally killed several of these screens in different cars. They are cheep POS. Get a Xenarc. They are both USB touchscreen. Myself and Ritalin Kid have bulit several carputers in the past. check out http://www.hyndsitetech.com/H2.html for our H2 hummer install.
Back on topic, don't get Lilliput. The major issue with them is the touchscreen going bad. The monitor will still work but the touchscreen will not.

We found that on some cars, mostly GM, that there will be some "engine noise" on the screen. Kinda like the moving lines on old TV, but gets worse with more RPM. But yes the screen can be wired right into the 12V of the car. I have disconected the cig. lighter and wired in there with good success.

Get a Apple mac mini get a older g4 version, you can pick up a used one for about $250 with built in bluetooth and wireless. also wont take up as much space as a laptop.

If you are interested i can find you one for a good price (I'm a machead)

Seems I read on several posts on mp3car.com that the lilli's blow. Hadn't heard of Xenarc, but I will check them out. Thanks for ther tip!

As far as noise, space, cooling, RF issues, whatever...I have been an installer since 1980. I have dealt with noise/RF crap for longer than most R3V'ers have been breathing. I am sure I can make all of this come together just fine.

The laptop will be on sliders under the passenger seat, most likely.

I am probably going to relocate batteries to either side of the rear seat, using smaller Kinetiks, but maybe not. Whatever I do, I am going to make better electrical stability for this goddamn car, somehow.
