automatic question

I have an 87 325i automatic and to get it to shift into either Reverse or Drive I have to first shift all the way down to 1st gear or from P to 1st back to P and then to reverse. Sometimes it works fine and goes right into gear, other times it doesn't. Once it is in gear it shifts and drives fine..

any ideas?

No it doesn't slip at all...once it goes into gear the first time, everything is fine. And will continue to work fine all day...just that first time.

Need to change the fluid??

This is my Dad's E30...I am used to manual cars and never had to deal with an automatic.
