Registering a car out of state.

I need some help. I'm in california and my car is in california and i want to register my car in indiana(no smog). It was previously registered in indiana but the tags expired since i wasnt driving it i didnt renew it.

does anyone know of any first hand information to assist me with this small snag before i start driving my car again? my family still lives there so i was going to use my mom's address in indiana.

Heres what i was going to do.....

Get california insurance, mail a copy of the insurance card or maybe the real card back to indiana. have my sister register the car at the local branch saying she wil be driving it there in indiana. It if works, she gets the tags and plate and mails it back to me here and bam im all set. Thats in a perfect world.

How long have you been in CA? If you still have an Indiana license your plan is probably okay. If you have a CA license, have lived in CA for a while and have Indiana plates...you may have trouble if you get pulled over.

Not when the car is registered in his sisters name.

Im thinking you should be good. Here in NH all you need for a car over 15 years old is a bill of sale to register the car (no title). Make one up for your sis and sell the car for like a buck. Have her register, get the plates, and your home free. Not sure how insurance would work out, in NH its pretty lax and they dont ask for an insurance card unless you actually get in an accident.

You have 20 days from either starting school or a job to change to Kali plates: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures...r9.htm#feesdue

Commercial vehicles and any vehicle owned by a California resident must be registered upon entry into California unless a special permit was obtained. Visitors whose vehicles are properly registered to them in their home state may operate their vehicles in California until they:

        * Accept gainful employment in California.
        * Claim a homeowner's exemption in California.
        * Rent or lease a residence in California.
        * Intend to live or be located here on a permanent basis (for example, acquire a California driver license, acquire other licenses not ordinarily extended to a nonresident, registered to vote).
        * Enroll in an institution of higher learning as a California resident or enroll their dependents in school (K-12).

Fees must be paid within 20 days of entry or residency to avoid penalties.

NOTE: Nonresident military personnel stationed in California or their spouses may operate their vehicles with valid out-of-state license plates from their home state or the state where the military person was last stationed.

Kali sucks on the fees/fines BS.

In Massachusetts, the car gets regestiered where it is stored most of the year. Hence, if the car spends a lot of time in NH, you can legally get NH plates on it, saving costs usually. Thats whay round where I am a lot of people with a commercial fleet will store the vehicles in NH and get by with NH tags. I myself run Commercial tags on everything, even the BMW.

I would see no problem with having it regesteried in Indiana, since you can claim its garaged there most of the year.

Yeah... Pretty much the only way you will get away with it... Is if you're in the armed forces. My friend Dave is in the Navy, and he gets away with running Pennsylvania plates on his car. He has the car registered to his mom's house.
