Is that a 2.8 complete ALUMINUM block?

Seems one would only need a 3.0 M3 crank and high compression slugs to make a mean 300hp 2.9 S50 US M engine.

All the bolts, coolant passages, etc. are identical.....direct swappable parts. ..... you will want to utilize the OBD I head......regardless of what shortblock you choose to go with. The reason behind this is that ALL of the emissions equippment ties in at the cylinder head (or ties into something that is attached to the cylinder head).

For the shortblock, there isn't any emissions equipment tied into it anywhere.....so it doesn't matter whether you go with OBD I or OBD II here. Just the top half of the engine is where you need to stick with OBD I. An ideal combo would include the aluminum blocked M52 bottom end from a Z3 with either a S50 head or an M50 head with cams and porting work. You would have a screamin' motor and you would hardly add any weight to the front of the car. Even if you go with a iron block M52 from a 328i/is, you are likely to add roughly 40 lbs. to the front at the most.

There ya go Eric. If you don't have one already, that would be a SWEET upgrade. A lot better than simply putting the head you already have on it. You could have this ported and then sell your current engine complete.

Good luck, and keep up the good work.

That should be a fun little project. With a few body mods you could probably retain the E30s original weight balance. I wish I could get ahold of one of those as easily as the S52s are to come by because I think I could deal with a little less HP for that until I had the money to build it.

That thing with an S50 head should be a great pair.
                  Im now E30less.

Whats up with the oil pan?

                    I bombed Korea every night.

Yeah the oil pan is fucked. It doesn't really matter though because I can't use it anyway.

Robert, I already have M3 cams in my M50 engine. I also have all the E36 M3 head components (retainers, springs, etc) stashed away. These were not installed with the cams because I didn't want to pop the head. When I do the rebuild I'll have them thrown in.

That is an awesome lead though! $800 is a steal!

Dare I ask for the cost of that engine (mainly b/c I'd like to see the kind of cash I'm going to have to shell out for a similar block). PM me if you don't want to be so public.

haha, yeah. Look at Stu's Dyno run. He makes 225rwhp and has a lot more than that! 11:1 CR too.
