TCD 325i Turbo Update. Update! 14/15psi now.

The car has been driven ever day for the past 4 weeks by my partner Sweeney. We are running a tiny bit of ignition retard and the car is happy at 12psi non intercooled. We have a couple of things left to tweak but plan to dyno it next week.

So what kind of power do you think it is putting out?

We'll dyno it next week. Figure about 240rwhp.

That seems really high for a non IC turbo. Maybe im wrong but what are the other turbo guys running for power?
How much do you guys expect for the IC version? Seems like a really cool project, I wish I had the money.

The car dynoed at 147rwhp n/a. Getting 93rwhp out of 12psi seems really conservative to me but we'll find out next week. I could be wrong. I expect 300rwhp witht he intercooler and 15+psi. Figure that a proper intercooler is worth about 30rwhp.

Todd what day are you going to the dyno? I want to stick mine up on it. Mine is back and living, but undergeared.

How imperative is it to have an Intercooler when adding a turbo? I know it creates a denser charge for more effective combustion, but will running a turbo w/o an intercooler create some other undesired side-effects (besides lower HP)

I would not expect any premature failure of parts basis non intercooled vs intercooled on a street car. Street cars spend so little time on boost that the percentage of increased wear is neglible.

A non intercooled car is just limited to the amount fo boost that can safely be produced vs an intercooled car.

Now, a race car or car that sees frequent driver's schools would really benefit from the cooled charge air. Spending large amounts of time on boost with intake temps at 160-200+F will certainly put a beating on engine components.

Todd, can you tell me an estimate of how much retard your running thu out the rpm band ?

Also, is the car running on 93 octane or is it higher ?

My goal is to reach 12 psi

93 Octane. .5 degree of retard per pound of boost. We had 94 octane up until about a month ago.

Thats 6 degrees of retard at 12psi... doesn't seem rediculous to me...

Sweeney made a boost controller and added a little more fuel and a little more retard and it's running 14/15psi without any detonation. He finally told me that it's pulling hard! All his previous comments were that it is OK. Can't wait to drive it in the morning.

I wish I worked at a turbo shop. That would be mighty cool. Is this motor stock internally?

Yep, 100% stock motor with 150k on it.
