That said, if I was going to get a Porsche, it really would be a 928. I have a couple catalogs sitting here in front of me, and suprisingly, most of the replacement parts are very similarly priced to the old Bimmer parts. (I KNOW someone is going to argue this point...)

Alas, the point of this whole thread was NOT that I am dying to pour money into a piece of shit 944, because I'm not, it was that Porsche owners SEEM to be pansies, unlike BMW owners who seem much more ready and willing to jump in and fix / modify / change shit. It just shocks me that in the BMW community, someone would jump on a $900 E30, fix it up, and build a sweet motor for it, whereas in the Porsche community, the idea of turbocharging a non turbo motor is unheard of. I'm sure one or two people got that point.

And just for the record, everyone claims that Italian cars are money pits and unreliable piles of crap. I bought a 1987 Alfa Romeo as my second car... Everyone warned me and laughed. It was the most reliable car I ever had! Bosch electronics probably helped though. The only time it left me stranded in THREE years was when a voltage amplifier for the L-jet system went out. Replaced it for $45. Then I went on to install a 3.0 V6 and 4.10LSD transaxle, panasport 15x7s, konis and good springs. It was a riot!

I think some cars get horrible reputations for being money pits, like the Alfa, but what it really really really comes down to is who owns it, and what they are willing to do themself. Sure a car can be a money pit if you pay someone to fix it... But if you invest in a service manual and have your own tools then there are very few things that you can't do yourself, even on a 944.
944 is a money pit, I owned one..urr it owned me. I never took it to a mechanic, and it STILL cost me oodles of dough to maint it. Plus M20 timing belt and water pump proced.= $80 2.5 porsche motor T\belt\waterpump\cam belt tensioner\balance shaft belts\BS seals and WP=$400 And alot more fun to put in in a car with 10 less horses than an i E30. Now if you want to get one and swap in a LS1, thats different. But trying to stay on top of maint. and modding a waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswafflesfied 4 banger is futile and crazy expensivo. I will admit that my 944 motor was solid and it never did not start for me after I got it running the first time, But broken shifter, clutch hydralics, and a busted rubber center in the clutch disc kept me busy and on the cell for a ride. It seemed like every week something was wrong with that car and while fun to drive, not that damn fun. I let mine sit till my moms traded it in on a Benz and got $4,000 for it. I bought it for $1,500, drove it for 2 years, and put about 2k in it.

holy shit was that for the 914-6 GT? the only different parts are the engine (heavier+oiling system), gauges (pretty much no weight diff.), ign. switch and colum, they had steelies stock, unless you got the fuchs or you sprung for the mahle's (stove burners) lightest wheels ever produced by porsche btw., and the brakes/ hubs which were actually bigger, therefore heavier.
the 914-6 GT would prob. be heavier since it had the mechanical inj (a little heavier because of the boat anchor mech inj pump) and maybe heavier because of the fender flares. i guess that would depend on if it was a street or race version.
where did you get the info? just wondering??

I agree with you, but performance parts for the a 944 are not even close to similar in price as performance parts for an E30, because they dont sell half as many. And parts are going to add up fast.
And my $800 ETA is probably going to have a total of over 10k invested into it before I get even close to being done with it in the next couple of years. Is it going to be an M3? No. I hope it will be able to do circles around and M3 EVO III and still be a modest daily driver. And I understand what you are saying about getting a 944 and turning it into a 951 killer, But it is going to a good chunk of money to do it.

it seems that you are determined to pour $$$$ into a porsche....despite all the recomendations that you are being given. so to give the comments some validity....how many of the people that have posted on this thread have actually owned/serviced/have hands on experence with porsches to back up their opinions?
for the $$$, if you want a track car get a 911!
you can get 80's 911sc's and carerras for reasonable $ or you can get into a c-2 (2 wheel drive) or c-4 (all wheel drive) for a little bit more.
for the ultimate sleeper N/A car you can take an early body car (although finding a non rusty one is hard to come by...early rust protection was shitty at best!) drop in a 3.2 complete motor STOCK with all the motronic management and headers and a stock dual outlet s/s Dansk muffler and drive with a giant smile on your face like the coolaid man! you can even have A/C! something that you really can't do on most of the 911's with out some major mods, and have it blow cool w/o heating up the engine.
just my with some experence to back it up!

Hmm, what does the phrase teh sexzorz mean? I know teh must be an intentional misspelling of 'the,' but I am struggling to decode the word, sexzorz. Does it mean 'ball licking POS moneypit?'

    ;-) :drink:

928 guys have no choice but to tear into the cars themselves. If they took it to a Porsche mechanic for engine work, they would probably be forced to just abandon the car then and there. My friend has one with ~35K miles on it; I'm just waiting for something to happen to it so that he will weep like a child when he learns the replacement part costs.

To each his own. But to me, a 928 looks like a fat chick squatting. Too much 'back.'

    Ha ha.

    951's are money pits.

Cheap and 951 do not go together.

They drive great with major turbo lag though. Stock brakes are superb for a 20 year old car too.

Unless your a baller, do not think about buying one.

It's kind of like the 18 year old kids that dream of E30 M3's and think a 8K E30 M3 is a good car......
