They can usually do it over the phone. All they have to do is punch the serial number into the computer and hit the button... Unless you have some jew ass dealer that's gonna charge you for doing that.

The dealership here makes you come in to have it done.

        yup and yup.

They used to just do it over the phone- I mean, who the hell is gonna steal a POS OEM E30 stereo and then try to get the code?? But, last time I had to get a radio code, they made me come in to the service dept, show them proof of ownership of the car (in this case- the registration was fine), and then they punched the radio serial number in their system and printed out the code for me. The service manager said BMW changed their policy and were not supposed to give out codes without this procedure.

        YMMV

Looks like i might have a long quiet trip to the BMW dealership. :P

Will it matter if the proof of ownership is different from the radio's serial number?

Shouldn't matter- I don't think they even have records of what serial # radio went into what VIN# car.........

But, it couldn't hurt to call- the worst they can say is "NO"...

Might want to try posting on some other BMW forums, I know there are some people on BFC and Roachfly who work at BMW dealerships- they could probably hook you up.
