Not an E30 but... what would you think of a Calypso 2002?

What do you all think? I'm not a purist, and its not getting an s14, rather an M20. I wish I could afford an S14 when I started this project, but it is just fine with me to be carrying the more run of the mill engine. Please don't mention anything about the engine choice here, as I most likely just wont be listening at all. Ive had the car since before I got my license, and its been a project that has only gotten bigger and bigger. The 02 will have a mostly black interior, while the exterior will consist of turbo flares, turbo air dam, turbo rear spoiler and probably some gunmetal center Panasport style wheels. Hush, 02 purists lol

Aside from that, what I want this to be about is color choice. It is still a solid good few months still off even if I haul ass, but Ive been really thinking about what paint color I want it to wear when its done. I wanted something brilliant but that wouldn't scream for attention, bright but dark too, a color that would go equally well with black trim as clean chrome, and since the car is red right now, if I were to stay in the family, Calypso is easily one of my favorites.

If you don't think Calypso is any good, what would you suggest?

BLACK is the only color to paint the car you described-- maybe white with some turbo graphics.

If I were to do a 2002, I would do some wild color...certainly not burgundy.

Also, the orig turbo was polaris. (dark silver) a few shades darker would look good. Mine is going to be nevada or siennabraun.

I think the calypso would look good as would a dark almost gray metalic silver. There was a turbo M20'd inka orange 02 in performance BMW a while back still got it some where

That turbo belongs to a fellow named curtis in orlando. His car was inka. Last I heard it was running 10 lbs and pushing 250+ at the wheels. Pretty nice.

I think you'll be plenty happy with the m20.

As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

I'd personally do white, hides alot of imperfections in old metal, looks great even when not well maintained (give it a good wash and forget the wax). Goes really well with dark wheels, really gives contrast with black trim.

Ah, the thread picked up some. I think it would look good, as the car essentially WILL be restored, just not stock, and with a different appearance. Since nothing else will be original, I was thinking I'd like to keep it close to red.

I know about that turbo M20 2002 that was in performance BMW. I havent met him personally yet but Ive talked to him for years, since he was originally putting the stock M20 in.

I dont have anything against Black, white, silver, or any of the shades in between, but this car is special and those are the most run of the mill "colors" everywhere. It may end up being something in there anyway. lol There have been compromises everywhere already in this project one way or another.

I do appreciate the suggestions. Before I really looked into un-period correct colors, I was really considering Inka (and still am), but its just soooo damn bright and maybe a little too catchy. Besides that, Curtis' turbo 02 is Inka, and even though we're on opposite coasts and I have half a thought to SC mine, they would be like twins. Take that however you will, but I dont know what I'd think. He doesnt care and I already went from stock, to using my alpina flares, to ditching that idea and going with the easier turbo look.

Nogaro, maybe D-Schwarz would be my personal choice, but Calypso would probably look hot too.

There's also a silver that came on early 90's Honda Accord SE's - IIRC it's called Solaris Silver - if you ever see a silver accord with a black leather interior, take a good look at the paint - it's one of the nicest silvers I've ever seen. At least they looked good 15 years ago.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

I think schwartz is one of the worst colors for a 2002. the main appeal to me are its classic looks - which schwartz ruins. A cool color for an 02 thats not stock is laguna seca blue. Red is another one of my least favorites for 02s - i just sold my verona 74 for that reason (and others). I've always been a fan of the greens, browns, and pastels. I think a turbo siennabraun 2002 will make for a hell of a sleeper car.
