Portland, OR paid compensation for helping w/ tranny work

Today I took my car into a local shop to get an estimate on replacing a transmission bushing. Upon looking at the car, the mechanic told me that the way the clutch feels signifies that there is a pressure plate issue. He said that he thought the tranny was still good, but that the pressure plate and clutch would need replacement. I haven't got much cash right now, but the thought of my baby having tranny damage is one that I refuse to entertain. I'm going to get the work done one way or another.... I don't have the mechanic knowledge to do all the work. If there is someone in the Portland area that would be willing to help me out I'd be willing to pay a decent amount for assistance.

All he's telling you is you're going to need a new clutch soon...

Yup, a clutch job is not a big deal. Nothing is wrong with your tranny, just sounds like the clutch needs to be replaced.

I think he knows that. He's asking if anyone in the Portland area can help him change it out and fix anything else that might be wrong.

I see, I thought he meant he was worried that something was wrong with the tranny itself, and wanted someone to help him fix it.

              He did say that.

Sorry for the unclear wording; I should have just said "He said {the mechanic} that he thought the tranny was still good, but that the pressure plate and clutch would need replacement." I need help doing this.

That makes sense. There are a lot of people here on the board in the Portland area that should be able to help you with a clutch job.

Can someone give this dude a hand?

I should also add that there is only a small amount of tension on the clutch until it is pushed halfway down and then the tension jumps. The mechanic I talked to said that the transmission is going to get damaged if I drive it like it is for long because the clutch isn't engaging properly creating undue stress on other components.

So did he mention that since you have a hydraulic clutch, what you feel on the pedal is not necessarily what is actually happening?

What you are describing sounds just like how mine felt before my slave cylinder failed. When it took a shit, it dumped all of the fluid on my driveway, and the pedal went to the floor.

New slave and all has been great every since.

Does your clutch slip? Roll on heavy throttle in 4th up a hill...felling for slip. You should be able to tell.

Sounds like a clutch slave to me as well. Mine failed back when I had the getrag 265. Super easy fix.

Check your clutch fluid, if it's good, try bleeding the system.

Thanks for the advice! I most certainly will look up how to diagnose and check the clutch slave with my bentley manual. However, the mechanic I talked to specializes in German cars and he seemed pretty sure that fixing the problem could only be accomplished by getting access to the fly-wheel (but then again him lowering my tranny is his bread and butter). If anyone has any other ideas, please keep them coming.
