    '88 325is tach reading high

went to testdrive an '88 325is a friend is looking at. besides some of the normal things wrong w/ these older cars, i noticed the tach was reading VERY high. it pulled well but i looked down at the tach as saw it going past 7k!!! it's a motometer cluster.

at idle it was just above 1k, but the idle sounded a little rough
cruising at 50mph in 5th it was at 5k

these cars saw both VDO and Motometer clusters? could it be a coding plug? the car's history is mostly unknown.

Sounds like it might have a 4-cylinder coding plug. Check to make sure they arn't playing games with the mileage, it might have a 318is cluster in it.

does it have after market geuges (did he install anything himself?)
if soo then he had to have taken off the tach needle and when reinstalled might be off.
