Also, this project is really cool and shows lots of talent, but it seems to me like this guy is going thru an awful lot of trouble to have a VW that drives like and e30, or an e30 that looks like a VW.[/QUOTE]

thats true but i think hes just after the cool factor because he can do it... i really really wish i had learned to weld well at an early age. im glad there are guys like this that i can live thru vicariously. i wish i had 1/10 that guys skill

Yeah I agree, it doesn't make much sense, but its cool as hell. Sort of like saying why swap an s52 when you can just get an e36 m3 ;) Not as cool.

Who knows why those guys took that on - did you see the RUST!!!!! Those old MK2s are rust buckets.

My mechanic is a VW guy and he was commissioned to build a twin engined Corrado. There is apprently a big writeup on vwvortex about it. Another one that leaves me scratching me head as to why, but you have to admire the workmanship.

edit: link to twin engine corrado : http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2611113&page=1

If any of us cared about reliablity, we would be on a honda forum. I still get nostalgic about my old mkI GTi. Who wouldn't fall in love with that close ratio transmission, rev happy motor, deeply bolstered recaro knock-offs, and oh so easy to work on. The ideal stoplight hooligan car, of course past 75mph..... ehh not so good.

ive been watching that nut for awhile.. gonna be a cool car.. as for the vw haters.. fuck yall lmao.. no really vws are entry level cars . bmws are luxury /sports cars and cost twice as much, look at it like this the new rabbit with the 5cyl is a great little car to drive.. the turn in is great . the power is smooth and nothing like the mk4 2.o(wich i must admit was horrible) and yet it costs 15-18k depending on trim level and looks great hammered on the ground with oem audi wheels, Mk4 1.8ts are great cars, i had the pleasure of owning a diposable 20th an for 4 months and i must say i was a hater before i aquired it but gave it back to my buddys bank a beliver they are stable little moutain goats even though they weigh a ton had all brakes i could ever need and 200 hp was great to play wit9chipped and dp)h . Now ive actaully owned about 25 mk1 2 and 3s.. easy and cheap cars to build. i personally like the 2.0s in the mk3s . they are perfect for what i like to do (canyon running) now granted all these cars could benifit from 100 more hp but what car couldnt.. end rant

The newer GTI is a big fat pig and they are concentrating on comfort not performance hardly at all. 200HP 207 ft lbs of torque and it's juat as fast as the lighter Honda Civic Si. When VW gets serious, only then will I care.
As for the older VW's, they are a great start for a light weight pay car. That's a great project he has going. I wish him luck.
If VW made a GTI that was a fairly "stripped" model, I'd be all over it.

You gotta be kidding, the mk5 GTI is sooo much better than the previous mk4 GTI and it actually feels very very nice when you drive it. I test drove a manual and dsg versions before I got my current daily driver and it doesn't feel like a fat big at all, and I doubt it's as slow as a civic with way less torque (although new SI does have lsd which is a nice touch from Honda). Plus, the 2.0T with FSI with just ecu tuning gets something like 50more hp and 80more ft.lb of torque and it's suspension is much much better than previous VW's, finally IRS and not a flex beam in the back. I've had a mk4 1.8t and it was a POS, sorry the engine was OK, inside was OK but the rear end sucks, quality of the car depends on where it was built and mine had electrical problems and a tranny problem so I got rid of it and got the best VW ever made, R32 and had 0 problems with it even after running a full season of autox and a couple of track days. And the mk5 even with FWD and 40hp less than the R32 is not much slower due to a much better chassis.

Have you actually driven the car, just curious ?

I think he has it done now, but I can't find pics of the engine in the car, or a video or anything. The canada website that he linked doesn't work anymore.
