    85 535 m-package?

longs story short, i have the chance to buy and 85 535 M?
ive never seen one so ill explain a bit
the car has a basic m30 3.5l m-technic bumpers, skirt and wing, m- shift knob, beige cloth seats with the m- colered pins
on the drivers side door jam there is a badge, it read
b.m.w (you know the long version)
    imported by robert w guinn
the guys telling me there where only 1400 made like this,
he seams very honest but not too knowledgable about the "rare" car he owns
it is mechanicly sound, 198k on the clock, head was replaced
bilstien hd's and some sort of exhaust,
so my question is, should i jump on this thing for 3500? or let it slide,
it would strictly be a minor investment, nothing more.
    thanks, rob

    bought it, pics up!!
odo doesnt work (great i know) also 4500 redline, perhapes this is a replacment "e" part?

    no leaks!

It was called an M535 there was an M635 also. they did have the basic M30 engine in them. Everything you listed sounds correct. I have no idea what the value is, but if it's very clean and straight then I would thinks it's worth at least that. I'm sure someone with the knowledge will chime in shortly.

They were never sold in the NA. Ones that you see were most likely legaly brought to Canada and than made their way in the US.
There isn't much to it other than a few things you've mentioned. With that milage, I would say 3Ks sounds reasonable if the car is in decent shape.
Make sure you sneak under and check for presence of catalytic converter (if NY requires emisions).

If you wanted, you could probably sell the MTech body kit for about a grand (given that it's in good condition).

Pimpin 80's had a huge Grey Market for these cars.

Post up some pics? I love the E28 M cars, but I thought that even the M535 had the M motor (s38?) in them. I'm not sure but you might want to check on that.

nope, it is the M30 3.5ltr. Just an "Mtechnic1" of the e28. it was badged M535 also. as far as only 1400 being built, BS on that one, I saw tons of those things in the junkyards over here in germay in the last 10 years, maybe only 1400 in the U.S.
anyway, its a cook lar, and for that money in the U.s. if its not a rust bucket, you cant go wrong.

So that was not a true M car then. I woulda' sworn that I've seen some of the earlier e28 M535s with the s38 in them???

                      Nope. None did.

What the M535 got was the dirty high comp 3.4 liter. Never made it to the US though, grey market only.

What you are thinking of maybe is the fact that M6's in non US market's were called M635Csi for the first few years. These cars did in fact have the S38 motor.

The M635CSi is a totally different beast, as it came with the 24v 3.5. The M535i is a "real M car" in the sense that it wears the badge from the factory, has "M" shit, and has "M" in the name. Reguardless, they are very cool and the body pieces alone are worth at least the cost of a decent US spec 535i! I'd buy it in a heart beat.

They were pretty rare grey market cars over here in the US. I've heard from various sources that they're all over junkyards in Europe. There was a beat one on a rough set of AC Schnitzer wheels down the street from my apartment in London. I don't think it moved much.
