Videos from my first autocross in the 87 325 (second ever)

I finally got the videos completely edited and good to go. I have higher quality versions, but I compressed them so they were fairly quick downloads for those with fast connections.

The blue 88 below is still in the garage all comfy... (seen here - we put it in the back of our third stall - hopefully there's enough room to do my work back there too ;))

So, until I get my car up and rollin, I'm havin fun in our chipped 87 325. I went ahead and slapped the tires that came with the blue car on to there, and called them my official "autocross rims". 8)

This was officially my second autocross ever. My first one was last year at the fairgrounds in my dad's M3. Just isn't teh same as the E30, the handling is very different.

I have two to choose from, one with music in teh background, and one without - take your pic:

(both videos have all three of my runs in them)

    Video without Music

Video with Music (I chose the song I used since it fit almost perfect.)

(I suggest right clicking and "saving as" it works better ;))

It's nice being able to look over these videos, and learn from any mistakes I may have made. I think the major one I made was carry too much speed thru the slalom. I did do the slalom in second gear. I usually shifted into first around every corner, to get back to my power curve. My last run, I was just carrying too much speed for the car itself to handle. I can't wait to get the blue car goin, cause then I can go all out - with suspension and stuff.

The only mods to this car is the chip... The tires I'm running at those Toyo Spectrums you get at Les Schwab - 580 treadwear rating.

To help compare times, the fastest time of the day was around 23 seconds in a Boxster. Many of the normal fairly quick times were around 26-27.5. I don't remember, but Cale's last time was 26.something - it was a really nice run. That E30 M3 definately handles!!

That autocross was more of just a fun day, the morning began with some practice for some driving skills, then the little autcross after lunch. This sunday will be the offical first autocross of the season. Lets see how I compare against my dad's E36 M3. :P (I should hopefully have videos up for that one too - props to my friend Brendan for bringing teh camera, and my friend Rob for recording my runs - they both took part too, and were glad I dragged them along. They'll be there Sunday as well. ;)

Any questions? Don't hesitate to ask.

PLEASE - let me know how I can improve my driving. That's basically why I posted these. My front tires were at around 40-42 psi and rear were around 37-38 psi. My dad told me later that I should have lowered the rears even more, since they are such hard tires. I'll play with this more this Sunday.

    Enjoy! :D[/i]

Yes, my dad is keeping the red 87 325 for my brother and sister. I will be using it until he starts driving or my car is up and running, whichever comes first. He couldn't justify selling it. Even though, I don't think my brother will be takin really great care of the car, but be better. I will be all over him if he doesn't.

The blue car I will be payin a loan off to my dad for, so it's basically mine and no one elses. It would be near impossible to autocross it with such a bad clutch. ;)

Damn, that looks like a lot of fun. How'd you fare in the time standings?

Since it wasn't an official autocross, there were no places, but comparing my times against those that got similar times - and heavily considering the car I was in and the suspension the car has, I think I did pretty well. I really don't want to be in the novice class anymore though. There's no challenge in there. I want to get my E30 to the point where I can keep up with people in faster cars.

There was a green Trans Am there that got a 37 at one point...how to you manage that??

My friend Brendan's fastest time was around 29 seconds in his RX7. And my friend Rob drove his dad's Buick Regal, 250 hp Supercharged V6 - handles like shit - he was able to get to around 30 seconds. Some other people in novice got some pretty good times, but they had a lot done to their cars.

This Sunday, I will be taking better note as to what car's would be a good comparison point for my car. ;)

And yes, it was shit loads of fun.

They should be in the videos - but, just in case:

                First run: 28.6 seconds w/ 0 cones
Sec run: 28.054 seconds w/ 1 cone (damn, woulda been a real quick run too)
Third run: 31.5 seconds w/ 1 cone (this was pethetic :P)

Ah those videos bring back memories. Thx for sharing.

The two biggest improvement in times will come from driving practice and 'R compound tires' (wow vs 580 treadwear!).

Novice tips that come to mind are learning how to pre-turn and understanding the 'G-circle.

Pre-turning is just that, turning the wheel before you get to the turn. It takes time for the car to roll up against the suspension and start turning (esp. tight slaloms when going from full roll left to full roll right and vice versa); softer suspension cars usually need more pre-turn
                          than stiffer ones.

The G-circle is an idea to explain overall grip. Say a set of tires are good for 1.0g of grip. Then you can either accelerate/decelerate at 1.0g or corner at 1.0g but not both at the same time. The addition (vector addition if you did some physics) of both cannot exceed 1.0g or the car will slide.

Best of all, talk to the driver's with fast times and ride along if allowed with an emphasis on the street cars. See what they do.

You got me excited about autocrossing this summer. Nice to see an ole stock 325i out there.

I should have my Type C's shod in the R compounds I have for some extra fun during Auto-X.

I'm glad physics may actually come in handy eventually....... :)

My dad instructs at BMWCCA Driving Schools, so he'll be teaching me some stuff too.

Really, I'll have to check those videos... :x (I screwed up somewhere I guess)

That's something I'll have to try, the preturn - sounds like something that'll work quite well with this stock 325. :P

R Compounds will probably come next season, I'm gonna learn on crappy tires. It makes sense to me that R Compounds really do hide your mistakes, so I want to get lots of stuff down before upgrading to better tires. Heck, I want to do suspension work first too, tires will probably come dead last. ;)

Thanks for the tips. I'll definately be keeping that in mind tomorrow.
