    Thinking of a project

I would love to own a diesel bmw. Your thoughts on getting a 324d motor over here and dropping in into an early e30? Maby even running veg oil...I am not an earth loving freaktard, i just want it to have it and to get cheap power. Anyway, thoughts?

      Barney or Fred?

I think you should just cut out the floorboards and go full blown flinstones. Thats cheap power! Plus you'll save a ton of money by not having to get a gym membership. You can blow that loot on lowering your car and getting your feet closer to the ground.

Just kidding sounds like a cool project can't wait to see the build!

I heard (from god knows who) that Jordan's car (his e30) was slated for this. Don't know if it is true or not.

According to Jordan, the guy who bought his car is going to DD it for a while, then use it to showcase a high-power bio-desiel engine for his company. If I recall.

Anyway, couldn't you just use a US 524td engine? There aren't many 524td's around, but I bet finding one here in the states would be much cheaper than shipping one over from Europe, even if they are more common there. Nobody really likes those engines anyway, so I doubt they'd be high dollar even with the rarity.

I just got finished draining, cleaning/flushing a tank on a "friends" 324tdtouring 2 days ago. no lie, he fills-(used to fill) the thing up at the burgerking here on the u.s. army post. Once it got cold, all the fat chunks solided up on it, and plugged it all up. kinda like hardening of the arteries I guess.
He bought the car, cause he planed on propane injecting it(still wants to). He removed the system from his evo VIII, and we were going to put it on the BMW, just kinda afraid to kill it, cause he likes to drive the french fry mobile everyday instead of tearing up the evo.

I honestly wouldnt waste my time, they arent fast, run VERY loud, and smell like food, which gives you a headache after about 15 minutes.

get a MBZ 240d (4cly) diesel engine. it gets 24/32 ish mpg in the heavy MBZ w123 shell. It should do even better in an e30 shell + there are many veg oil kits for it.

also they are relativly cheap, i found a whole 240d (rusty body) with 60k on the engine for $300 :)

Haha, I actually agree with finding a MB diesel motor. It won't be that difficult to fit into the E30, and they are EVERYWHERE unlike the BMW motors.

And using e.g. w124 300td engine would be great.

There are multiple examples of those engines producing over 300hp with stock internals, just by modifying charger system, injection pump and adding IC.

And yes they are based on mid 80's desing.

                        Crazy.

Yea I have a w123 and w124 300d's great cars. The w124 gets on it for a diesel. If you matched that with the e30 lack or weight compared to the benz + a manual tranny you'll have one sick quick car that gets awesome mileage.

My w124 diesel get about 38 mpg on the highway, and has no trouble breaking the speed limit either :)

Yeah, there was a kid in my engine class who had a 1980 300d Mercedes that was converted over to run on vegetable oil. According to him, and I believe him, the engine still ran just as strong and just as quiet as on vegetable oil. Also, he did not run the car purely on vegetable oil. He actually would start the car on regular diesel to warm up the car because it's colder up here, and then he would switch over to the oil. He also said that chinese restaurants use a much better cooking oil that is not as sludgy as a fast food place.

yes the dual system is the way to go, because you you live in a cooler climate you dont want the veg oil to harden or freeze, so that is why you run the diesel fuel in cold weather when you start the car and a few minutes before you shut it off. this way there is no veg oil in the fuel lines, hence preventing any blockage.
