Salvage yards + DIY = Awesome

DIY is great, get stuff done so cheap!

A while back my sister got plowed into her driver door, it was her fault but fortunately the other car had no damage and the other driver said not to worry about anything and didn't report the accident.

Unfortunately for her, the old door was destroyed. I was quoted between $400 and $800 to get it fixed. Screw that....

I went hunting in some salvage yards, I found a 94 Golf in the same black color and had a nice driver door. So I picked it up for $125 bones.

    Old door:

    New door:

    Old door off:

This thing was a bitch to get off, I ended up jacking the car up a tiny bit by the inner edge of the door, then I jumped up and down on the car until the old door wedged its self off.

    New door on:

The door is in mint condition too, no dents or dings or anything. Its kinda hard to tell because the car is so dirty, (thanks mn winter), but it looks really nice. I just have to figure out a way to swap door handles. I don't have the key for the new door so I don't know how I can get the handle off so I can swap locks over.

    Just thought I would share.

I don't see why you're so excited... Did you just discover salvage yards? I've been getting great parts for cheap from yards for a couple years now.

Is this the place where Jesus lives?

Dude... at least clean the numbers off and give it a quick wash before you snap the after photo... that's a borderline teaser shot. Good for you brother, nice hooking your sister up. Swapping VW handles is a breeze, Just jump on a VW forum for instrucciones. That new door is better than the old door! It doesn't have all the key marks around the door handle, oh and it doesn't have that massive dent either! Does your sis get liquered or have bad eye sight...seriously why are there so many key marks? Congrats on being a good bro dood, nice looking out.

why can't you just drill the new lock out and use the old one?
Das ist nicht nur nicht richtig, es ist nicht einmal falsch!

we repaired my wife's old saturn for about $70 in salvage yard parts when it got broken in to a few years back. that was a great feeling. the estimate was waaay more than that.

There is a torx head fastener in the door jam... remove and slide handle toward front of car... pull away from body and then toward rear of car...it is kind of a btich sometimes, or def your first time... but just be carefull of the lock shaft.

well shit, how the hell would I know I'm not there.
I'm just going off the dude's statement that he can't get the new lock off the door.
I'd of drilled it in less time it took you to type out your reply...but yeah, if it's that simple I'd not even be wondering in the first place.
