    Motor install parts: Recommendations?

OK, so thanks to the assistance of "Browntown", I have a known good running ETA motor sitting in my shop. 220,000 miles. Thanks again, Josh!

Well, it will be sitting in the shop when it gets out of the van...

My son's car is a total beater. 1986 325e. Our plan is to bodywork/paint/pretty up the outside. This car will be his first, he is 15.

Roller paint is gonna be fun for him!

His motor has a huge hole in the oil pan. I was told it ran and drove...with no driveshaft or exhaust, I doubt it... $100 ETA FTW!

Here is my question: What would you guys recommend replacing while the motor is out? I am going to re-use the clutch,(still has plenty of meat on it) so when Nigel fries it, we will have a good excuse to do a "i" swap, or M30, M50, whatever.

Here is the current replacement list:

    Oil pan gasket
    Valve cover gasket
    Cam seals
    Front and rear Main seals
    Water pump
    Timing belt
    Tensioner
Cap, rotor, plugs, wires as needed.
    Motor mounts
    Transmission mounts
    CSB
Driveshaft is 50%, but we will rock it for now.

Any other items you guys think absolutely necessary?

We have decent springs, shocks, bushings, brakes...and of course, it will get something for an exhaust.

I will be making a thread about a mini-meet/tech day to do the install. R3V help will be appreciated and reciprocated!

    Thanks,
    Luke

honestly, i'd do just enough to get it running reliably. no need to do all of that to a car for a 15 year old. my first car was a 93 nissan sentra. slow, automatic, but it was reliable. then i got lucky, and got a 90 240sx, 5 speed, fun, decided it was too much for me to drive when i was 16, now, i'm 18, and i drive a wrecked bimmer. remember, most people will wreck their first car.

Pilot bearing- they're cheap, and you probably don't have one in there if the donor engine is from an auto tranny car.

        NEW Flywheel bolts
        NEW head bolts

Sure, you can use the old ones, but you're not supposed to, and new ones are not that much $$$- you definitely don't want to have to pull the engine or drop the tranny to replace the flywheel bolts- better to do it now while it's easily accesible.

I personally wouldn't mess with the front seals (cam, crank) unless they showed signs of leakage. The cam seal in particular is easy enough to get to with the engine installed in the car.

          t-stat
various amounts of vac hose, high pressure fuel hose
          coolant hose's as need
          clutch fan
          fuel filter
check the rack for leaks, maybe new PS hoses since you will have easy acess.

all I can think of that hasnt been covered

I wish now looking back that my first car had been something like a 325e or a 528e. I could have had so much fun just DRIVING that thing and learning.

Input and output shaft seal on the tranny.

When are you doing the swap? I'd be willing to come and help out and I'm sure Josh would too. Maybe we can make it a 2 or 3 day weekend project?

That would be most excellent. I will bring the BBQ, we will feed in a major way.

Chicken bacon swiss burgers and homemade potato salad?

That tranny is just hanging there. Not even a tranny subframe, much less mount. I hope the driveshaft bits are correct. one half came with the car, the other came from an '87 325is that I parted.

It is a sheet metal shifter. Will that matter? Are they tough to change? Should we do it now? I am thinking early february...but I dunno.

hey since the tranny is out a input shaft bearing might be a good idea. None of the god damm fucking rattling when the clutch is out while sitting at a light or Taco bell an such. It drives me nuts, I will fix mine some day.
