To e30 or to boot e30...

    All,

    Monthly question on this forum!!

Should I keep my e30 or boot it?

The car has been in MA since new (rusty), all 4 doors are very rusty, the rocker panels are in poor shape. the trunk and rear apron are fine. the front end is starting to rust thru the paint in spots (hood and lower valance).
it'll need the following within a couple month, in order of importance:
    -clutch+ misc.
    -inputshaft bearing/seal
    -driveshaft rebuild
    -shifter linkage recond.
    -control arms
    -steering wheel
    -sunroof panel
    -hood
    -rear subframe bushings +trailing arms

I can do most things myself except for transmission/clutch. I am guess-timating $1000 worth of work there, maybe I can jump in and rebuild the shifter while they have everything down, to reduce the bill.

I found a mint e36 325is locally, I like it, but the insurance increase would end up cost me more/year. on the other hand the car has no rust!

    what would R3v do?

strip all the useful stuff, boot the rusty shell, find a non rusty shell and drive a hyundai till your project is finished.

        +1

if you don't have the room then hopefully you have friends? A new shell shouldn't be too hard to find. Tons of rust is going to be a big prob later...

I think I may end up just waiting for another one to come around. The engine has close to 250K original, same for the transmission and clutch.

Sometimes I wish I wasn't such a bike nut. I would have plenty of $$$ leftover for cars.

            Allrighty then.

WTF, are you paying full coverage? Unless your E30 is:1. Rare or 2. Pristine, fuck full coverage. A $5000 car does not warrant it. Several members here can attest to that.

You should not have any increase in coverage costs, or such a small difference as to be more than 100% boffset by the decrease in additional repair costs.

You already said you gots skillz in the shop (yO!) so if you do a minor R3V, it should be no biggie. The trick is to wreck it in such a fashion as to incur a "their fault" accident.

            Get the 325is.

Pay the $10 a month more for insurance.

            Smile when you drive.

            Luke

Oh wait...I just noticed you said E36....ignore the above. Find an 325is E30.

            Closing SOON!

I agree with Luke, but you should talk to your local insurance representative first.

For example, It is cheaper for me to insure my e30 with liability insurance (required by the state of New Jersey) AND collision insurance. Insuring it with only liability actually costs more. With the collision I may end up getting a few dollars if my car is ever totaled (let's hope not), and they also cover things like cracked windshields, hitting deer, etc.

I would have never thought this to be true if the insurance agent hadn't told me that. They may be able to work out some sort of deal for you.

I have minimum coverage on the e30. minimum in MA is liability, glass and a couple other things.

an e36 is as expensive to insure than the 2007 rabbit we just bought...

my last move increased my premiums (all of them) by $500. that's why I got the e30 to replace my passat.

I should be outta here by the summer.

1st of all you could spend $1000 doing all that work by yourself, forget it if you're paying a shop.

2nd of all it seems like it's time to retire the car. If it's got plastic bumpers let me know :) Hell if you wanna sell it for parts in the shape it's in now let me know.
