Cabrio deck lid brake light removal?

I've seen several cabrio's without the ugly third brake light on their trunk lid. I found out mine is leaking really bad, and I'd like to remove it. I know there will be holes left over, so what do you guys recommend be done about those? Can a body shop cover them up or something? Could I get a trunklid from another E30 without the brake light and have it painted to match? I already have most of the light off, i'm just not sure what to do with the harness. It doesn't appear to come off of the bottom portion and I really don't want to cut it. I can't imagine it doesn't unplug from somewhere but I can't seem to find where it would.

On mine, the harness ran up under the trunk trim and the plug was well back in there.

As far as the trunk lid, I replaced mine with a non-cabrio trunk lid.

You've already answered your own question .

Either have a body shop fill and paint or get a plain "i" trunklid with no holes or a "is" trunklid with holes for all of the OE rear spoilers .

You'd need to get an I trunk. You can also take off the brake light and get a new gasket or just use silicon all around the gasket area to make it seal. It mounts with i think around 4-6 phillips head screws under the tool box area.

Hey man...I have an Alpine "is" trunk lid with spoiler...in terrific shape.

If you bring $40 and your trunk lid with its leaky light, it is yours.

I will even help you put it on.

Looks like your trunk sheet metal problem is solved - thanks to Luke! The wiring for your brake light runs across the underside of the deck lid, down the hinge, behind the trunk liner. Their is a fastener plug right by the underside of the antenna to unplug the light. Now once you change deck lids & you get rid of it, your check panel "brake light" will stay on.
No one seems to have an answer on this board, as too how to jumper wire the plug or get the same resistance as (the now gone) bulb - @ 4 ohms - so the stink'n "brake light" will go out on the check panel. Any solution to this would be appreciated!!

Luke that's very generous of you. Is it Alpine White or Alpine White 2?

Just bypass the little PC board and solder the wires together.
When I first bought my Cab last year, the Brake check light wouldn't go out, even though everything was working.

Bypassing that little 1" x1" or so PC board did the trick.

I like the idea!! Which PC board are you talking about - in the trunk wiring for the 3rd brake light - or the check panel above the rear view mirror?

He's talking about the one in the wiring for the 3rd brake light.

                          Very good advice, thanks :)

Alp1, that is why I was asking.
