May get a bike for college, suggestions?

I was at NCSU today for the engineering open house and while walking around, after 15 minutes looking for a parking place with my parents, i mentioned something about getting a motorcycle and they said it may be a good idea.

now i have 0 experience with bikes, but if i ever get one i plan on taking the classes on them etc.

as for bike choice i have no idea...id rather have something stylish than fast but again....talking about bikes feels just liek me talking about E30's 3 years ago.

let the replies flow like wine!

Are you wanting a bicycle or a moped?

You can get a moped, and if it's under 50cc then you don't have to register it wil DMV (as far as they're concerned it's a bicycle). Most of them are like 49.5ccs. And they get over 100mpg.

That rounds up to 50 ;)

The ones I was looking at were 49.44cc :-D

If you just want to get around campus, you could probably use a goped easy enough too, but then you still have to park (depending if you drive there, or live close enough by)
My mountains are better than yours.

well id actually want a full size bike, as the trek from where i live to state isnt a goped-journey away. small 500cc honda sounds nice, how about years and prices? mileage? everyone knows about the mystic 100k mark on cars, what about bikes?

pretty much any of the mid-early 90's sportbike from the fab four (honda, kawasaki, suzuki, yamaha) make a decent inexpensive fun bike that won't kill you if you use common sense & take the course like you're planning to (i did it and, even though i RARELY ride & dont even have a bike right now, am glad i did)

              you can pick up a mid-early 90's Honda CBR 600cc sportbike for a couple g's, like an F2 or F3. CBR's aren't a bad bike (they go like generations... F1, aka hurricaine , F2, F3, F4, F4i)

if you can get past the different looks of the Yamaha FZR-600, i'd take one of those... REALLY light, easy to maneuver (but can get blown around by a crosswind on the highway) and fun.

but i've said it 1000 times here & i'll say it again if i had the cash, i'd find myself a late 90's, early 00 Kawasaki ZX-6R... but that's not exactly the best learner bike ;) although i know some guys that have started out on bikes like that

damn you guys... now i've been bitten by the bike bug again & am gonna go drool over bikes on ebay

EDIT: my suggestion... take the rider course before you get a bike. that way you know how to ride, have your license & can go test different bikes to see what fits you best

sure it is... not pages & pages... but they're there, i just looked last night

plug in a search for something like FZR*, YZF* CBR*, F1*, F2*, F3*, GSX*, ZX*, or something allong those lines... include the "*" so that you get all the variations of each model

what kinda bike & how much money ya wanna spend? i'll be able to give you a better idea of what to look for

yeah the bikes i listed above are about w/in that kinda price range, although you wo'nt get a newer pristine one. like i said, you can find a good conditoin mid-early 90's one for that kinda money though

i suppose another option is a suzuki gs500 for really cheap... it's just a 500cc standard "sporty" bike that you can probably pick up for less than a grand, but you'll probably grow outta that pretty quick since it's not really quick, although it's a great commuter.

take the Motorcycle safety course first, learn to ride from real teachers before you develope bad habits. You'll get your license, as well as an insurance break possibly
