Any good way to ship a fender?

I have a few people asking about the fenders off of my parts car, and the shipping rates I am getting from FedEx are insane!

Anyone have any insight on the best way to handle this?

I have shipped bumpers, side skirts, wheels, and the like, but never encounterd a $90 estimate for one box before.

    HELP!!!!!

i had the same problem with a new 02 front fender. minneapolis to california was 90 bucks. the buyer backed out when i told him. you can make the box smaller but it will end up looking like a panel off of bings M3 by the time it gets to its destination. greyhound would be cheaper but i dont know how hard they are on stuff nor whether or not the insure stuff.

Hey there, sorry I didnt get a chance to reply to your PM...
Depending on the size of the fender, I either use a bike box, or make a box out of sheet cardboard. Double-wall if it is an expensive fender. Usually I ship it freight, since that is all hand-handled (no conveyer belts/drop-kicking out of trucks).

Go to www.fedex.com and choose a "find a rate" and start throwing measurements in there until you figure out how large it can be and fall within a reasonable price range. You should be able to get it securely packed AND within a decent price.

You'll probably have to cut down a larger box or make a box to get it within the lower price range.

i made a box using one bigger one for the large half, and a smalled box for the front half. wrapped the hell outa the fender in bubble wrap, and taped the 2 boxes together over the fender. took it to fedex, was like $95, UPS about the same. went to grayhound, put it on the bus for like $30. got to its destination just fine.

FWIW, greyhound is all moved by hand. No machines/less volume = safer.

I sent one to Fl. It cost at the time around 35.00.

I'd suggest trying to ship from either a DHL staffed office/shipping warehouse or an UPS staffed office/warehouse. Not one of those UPS Stores or Officemax pickup locations, but the actual local shipping facility in your town.

They seem a bit more able to "bend the rules" and will often just charge you based on actual weight rather than dimensional weight (which for a fender would probably mean the difference between paying $25 or paying $100)

I have shipped rear plastic bumpers and seats in huge boxes. The DHL office charges me based on actual weight and not the dimensions of the box.

Next best option would probably be Greyhound. However, I believe the receiver will have to pickup the package at the station and delivery will be slower than DHL Ground when going across country.

DHL is very easy to deal with when shipping big things...in fact, i'm going to get an account with them. i have a fed ex account and it gives me discounts on shipping but they arent the best for shipping big things.

Guys, I've got news for you about Dimensional weight.... all the shipping companies (Fedex, UPS, DHL) use pretty much the same formula to calculate it- it's an industry standard.

The only way to get over on them is if you take it somewhere and they don't measure it, or they give you a break on the measurements- and then you pay for the shipping charges right then and there. If you have an account and just drop stuff off, they will do a "rate correction" on your ass quicker than shit and hit your account (or credit card) for the full size. They all have these scales that are in line with the conveyors in their facilities that scan, weigh AND measure each piece as it rolls across and then that info gets matched up to the tracking number- if you enter a lower than actual weight or size when you print up the label, they WILL "correct" it for you and you will get charged.

Don't believe me?? Try it. :P

I know what you mean, Bret. I once mismeasured a box that I thought was just under OS1, and they hit me for the $30 or whatever it was.

Anyway, I think I have a box cut that will get this thing to like $34. I just need to make sure I can wrap/pack it so it wont get mangled.
