Tire guy says 245 can't fit on 7.5 wide rim

Yesterday at work, I asked the tire guy to try to fit some 245/40/17 tires I picked up for free on my rear rims (17x7.5). He told me he could not safely fit a 245/40/17 tire on a 7.5" wide rim as it would bubble, and wear funny. He told me max would be a 235/40/17

I'm not sure I buy this. I know some E36 M3 guys that run 245's up front with stock rims which are 7.5" up front.

Any truth to what this guy says?

I really hope the 17x8.5 rims I have coming fit. I want to run 245's all the way around. Not only will they make the car stick, I'm lucky enough to have access to an unlimited supply of free 245/40/17 Michelin pilot sport tires. This means buring them off fast won't be a problem.

Eric, it really depends on 2 things:

    1. The tire
    2. The profile

So, tell me those 2 things, and I'll tell you if it will or won't work ;)

    EDIT:

Ok, for MPS in 245/40-17, you have a measured rim width (what the tire is designed to fit on) of 8.5"

The Min/Max tire sizes that that particular tire will fit on is 8" to 9.5", to be safe to DOT spec.

Thus, they won't work on 7.5's. The way you could get 245's to work on a 7.5, is, say, if they were 245/45's, but that would rub like hell.

235/40/17 should have a 17x8" wheel, but plenty of guys use 17x7.5". For 245/40/17 you need a 17x8" wheel. As for fitting a 245/40/17 on a e30, it will be tight, I have seen 235/40/17 fit, but the car cannot be very low. I have also seen 245/40/17, but that car had the fender flares hacked off, and wasnt low at all. From my experience and talking to other people, on a 4 lug e30 to fit 245/40/17 with 17x8 or 17x8.5 you would need about a 30mm offset, if it fits at all. But with your e36 5 lug I cant begin to estimate. Get some 235/40/17's on the wheels you got, some cheap pepboys spacers, spring pads and see what you can do.

That wouldn't mount. The inside of the rears would be trying to occupy the space of the strut.

I believe Ryan is running a 245/35/17 or 245/40/17 on his 17x7.5 e36 10 spokes, though he is running goodyears.

All of the tire companies' websites should have a chart of what width rims all their tires fit on. If it was say a 15" rim, it might fit because there is more sidewall to work with. My 18x7 rims can only fit a 215 tire.

                    True, I am.
I have no problems with the tires, and they don't look goofy of my 7.5" wheels. Why do you want 245/40? thats tall as hell for an E30, just run 245/35 or 235/40, the latter of the 2 having TONS of options.

95 M5 comes with 17x7.5 wheels wearing 235/40R17 all around.

245 fits on a 7.5 without an issue. But Ryan is right, run 245/35 so they arent as tall.

That wont look staggered, that will look retarded. 215 fits properly on a 7in wheel. it will be stretched on a 8.5.

There is no point at all in running staggered wheels with the same size tires all around. Infact... that is just stupid.
