E30 S50 swap

If you know all the techs here, you'll realize that the "craziest" one could be any of them. I have a couple ideas. One of them had a red e30 that he did a lot of motor work to. I think i know which porter you're talking about. Carlos with a red e30? If that's who you're talking about, he bought the car from the tech I'm thinking about.

I wasn't even thinking of asking you to get involved. I was just curious as to who you were talking about. I asked a couple other techs today and none were willing to attempt the swap. It looks like a shop around here is my only option.

edit: where do i get a euro maf (aren't they HFMs? non-vanos has the MAF, or am i reversed) and how much would one run... as if it wasn't fast enough :P

My brother and I will be doing the swap ourselves

We are in the process of swapping out his engine from his 635csi and we're putting in a turbo engine from a 1984 745i. Should be interesting to see how it turns out.

soon to be Euro 325i with S50B30

Weight is 1350kg with "17´s and full tank of fuel..
Thats 3000LBS

I walk away from everybody I have run up against except one Hopped up Trans Am.
We are talking 400hp+ here

Weight distribution is 53/47,, I feel no ill effect of the S50 over the M20 regarding to handling,, if I start to understeer, mild throttle will fix that

No doubt, with an S50, there are alternate methods of rotating the rearend. :twisted:

Bryson, the non-VANOS motors use a HWM (hot wire meter), and all the VANOS motors use an HFM (hot film meter). They switched to the hot-film meter because it lasts longer. The standard MAF sensor on all M/S50's is 3", while the Euro S50 and 540/740 uses a 3.5". A Euro MAF is about $350 new from the dealer. You can pick up a used one for around 200 or less. If you can find a 5/740 at a junkyard, try to pick up the MAF sensor. You can slap it on the 3liter and the a/f will be pretty good, but possibly lean up top. A way to help this is to use an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and run about 62psi (stock is 52). This improves throttle response immensely and you'll make great power. The larger MAF sensor improves power/torque across the board.
