How do you find wreked cars? Is there a insurance network?

Is there anyway to find and buy a wreked car with a running motor? Are there lists? Or do cars just end up at the local junk yard when they are totaled?

I might be looking for a running wrecked e34/e32 with a running motor.

How do you find such a thing?

If you really want to get into this area, then pic up a car dealer's license. That way, you can go to auto auction.

I am thinking about doing this for my next car.

Hahaha! Classic. My dad is an independent dealer, cars at dealer auctions go for rediculously small amounts of money, no shit.

yea, auctions are the best deals. one of my old co-workers picked up a 95 e36 m3 with light body damage(got scraped by a tree) and only needed like a new hood, fenders and door panels for well under 4k.

Its now a sweet looking car that he sold for a like 20k or somethin like that.

Yeah, you can make some serious profits. My friend's Dad buys cars from rental agencies (Alamo, Enterprise, etc.) that have been lightly wrecked for very little money. The companies would rather sell the car than have to deal with repairing it and such. Then he does all of the body work himself and spends ~$1k getting them repainted and color-matched. He sells them for about $5-7k profit usually.

Thats an amazing profit. My dad usually doesn't make such a huge profit like that.

Worst/Best car he had? He had a Arnolt Bristol, only 12 made. EVER. He sold it. Huge mistake.

Where CAN we get those? Is it even possible?

I know someone that knows someone with one, and he buys cars thru his hookup. Their family hates BMWs, they don't seem to understand that you can make so much money off them. So they buy crappy Suburus and whatever other cheap cars they can get...

Have you looked in ebaymotors, under the "parts cars" section (in Parts and Accessories). Just search under BMW and all kinds of neat stuff comes up.

You get em from your state's DMV ;).

But in CA, there are two kinds of dealer licenses, wholesale and retail. A wholesale license is a lot cheaper and easier to get because it doesn't require you to have an actual storefront and the liability requirements are a lot less. The drawback is that you can only sell your cars to other dealers/wholesalers and not the general public, so the profit margin is kinda slim and the type of car you buy has to be in demand. I don't know if it's really legal to sell the car to a friend with this license. You have access to all the special dealer-only auctions and can buy whatever you want.

Retail licenses is the same license that your local BMW dealer has. It requires that you have an office in a commercially zoned neighborhood with X amount of parking spaces, plus there is a large liability minimum ($5000? I forgot). You have access to all the dealer auctions and sales, but in this case you can sell to whoever you want for whatever you want, so profit margins and sales volumes are higher.

                        Yea, it isn't legal. :P

Interesting. Maybe look into it. But I'd probably only go there to see what BMW's auctions had, and see if there's anything worth gettin, ya know?

Yeah, they're still cheap. ;) It's insane how much you can markup a price on a Suburu. Sometimes I'm amazed at how well they hold up. I guess they aren't as crappy as I made it sound.

My mechanic told us that through the years he's been a mechanic, he's only had to fix 1 subaru with engine problems. Thats a pretty good record :P
