so i just just did my oil change....

just got done doing my oil change... swapped out the cheapo oil filter and ghetto oil that was in there from the last time.

Mobil 1 15W50 and Mobil 1 filter... car is definatley happier.. runs much smoother.. i was really suprised how much of a difference it made...

we'll see if i get any leaks from going synthetic

I think that is a rumor. I have a 214k motor that I beat to crap daily and I noticed no leaks when I switched to synthetic. Car runs great with it!
    Im now E30less.

Your car will run a lot quieter with the 15w50, it's pretty thick and should quiet things down. What grade oil were you using before?

With 15w50 full syn you shouldn't notice any leaks. That's some pretty thick oil. If you were to use a 5w30 or 0w30, then you *may* have a bit of leakage.

I run 5w30 full synthetic amsoil and I have never had a drop of leakage.

Im thinking of going fully synth. Is it bad to switch back and forth? What would be optimal? Im looking for something that will work in the winter as well as summer. Suggestions? Also a quiet engine would be nice.

            I bombed Korea every night.

I've heard mixed reviews about switching back and forth between dino and synthetic.

You'll be hard pressed to find something that will work well in the summer as well as the winter. I think most guys on here use a heavier grade in the summer and a lighter grade in the winter.
It also depends a lot on your driving style. If you drive your car really hard you're going to want a thicker grade for better protection. However, if you don't take it above 4k very often, you can get a lighter grade oil (which will give you better gas milage).
Since you're from MN, you'd probably want a 0w30 or 5w30 for the winter months. Your car will start much easier when it's cold outside.
For the Summer, it's really up to you. A lot of guys run 15w50, which will give you really good protection. I use 10w40 in the Summer months ( I don't drive my car that hard).

someone educate me on oil. I always use 5w30 just because it's what is in my garage and is free :). I live in so-cal so i don't get harsh winters. I do alot of freeway and like to rev my car out from time to time. What is the best oil for me?

I run 15w30 mobil 1. Great stuff. I have a leak somewhere though. Just had to add a quart today. Anyone know how to target a leak? A month or so ago, I cleaned out the bottom of the engine with a wet towel. Lots of dirty oil under there. Couldn't see where the leak was coming from though. It pisses me off.

I would use a little thicker oil, since it gets so hot in so-cal. I normally put in 10/40 and its seemed fine so far.

I would say that you should use at least 10w-40, if not 15w-50 or 20w50. 5w30 isn't going to protect your engine very well, especially in the so-cal heat.

Every car on this message board should be using 15-50 or 20-50.

The only exception is during really cold winters; then you may step down to 10-40 or 10-30 even. No less.
