also, those drain tubes (look kinda like 3/4" OD coolant hose) connect to the outside by black plastic holders on the inside of where the bumper mounts... they can come disconnected - as mine did - and dump into the battery area or jack area.
I reconnected mine, drained the area with a turkey baster... and no more leakage.
Just as a precaution, though, i actually took a power drill and drilled a tiny hole from under the car into the battery tank area, and rust-oleum coated it. that way if any water does get in there somehow, i won't have to worry about rusting out my valance.
You have to kind of feel for the hole at the back of the sunroof opening, then push the cable into the hole. Make sure the piece of cable is long enough.sigpic

as for the water in the trunk, there are some drainage holes on the bottom of the rear valence and under the spare tire well that look like half moons , stick a flathead screwdriver in them untill the water drains , all my e30's have been closed up from the undercoating from the factory, once I opened them , no more water , same for under the battery too.sigpic

I sealed my '86 325es tail lights 137 times before I finally realized that they weren't leaking.
There's a body seam directly above the tail light that can crack and leak, and it looks exactly like a leaky taillight gasket. Open your trunk and look at the trunk channel above the lights. Inspect the seam closely before you do anything else. It will only take a couple of minutes to check them, and rule them out.
I'll take a pic of the area tomorrow and circle the seam for you.McCain's military draft: Are you willing to bet your life?

I had water leaking into my trunk over this last winter. I haven't seen this particular problem reported here, so I'll share my experiences.
It turned out the spot weld holding one of the trunk lid bumpers had popped loose from the trunk roof. This left a 1/4" hole in the metal in the channel at the top of the truck lid. Big water leak, and it was hard to see the hole because its hidden by the trunk's rubber seal. The tip off came when I opened the trunk and a load of water came in and ran off the trunk hinge.
I used a coat hanger to press the trunk lid bumper back up into the trunk roof and some JB weld to fix it back in place.
No more trunk leaks after that.
