    m20 CR gearbox value???

    Hello all,
I just joined due to the purchase of WBAAA2307K4257545. I own three 2002's (1971, 74 & 76) & have owned a 1981 e21 auto (I converted to 5-spd) and a 1986 4dr 325e - so not new to BM's or e30s but will certanly need a refresher here and there. Most of my recent experience has been with my 2002 which was a DD for the past 4 years. My e30 is now an IS faker, started life as an auto but was converted to a 5-spd, got a 4:10 40% LSD, ST springs & sways, 14" basket weaves, ///M steering wheel, IS recaros, Split Second MAF conversion, front & rear strut bars, custom burned chip, variable fuel pres reg, uprated injectors, euro grilles & interior with rear head rests & more that I haven't discovered yet...

I pick up the car Friday (two days) and the seller is offering an m20 dogleg box as well as a 3.45 LSD as spares. How much is this stuff worth? I know that the dogleg boxes can't handle much power and also would want the 3.45 final drive (unless I want a hillclimb car :D with the 4.10). So question is how much are the gearboxes worth and how much is the 3.45LSD worth. They are out of a low (89K) mileage e30 323i.

If I install the dogleg box and 3.45 diff I'd also build an m20 stroker motor to mate up with it. Will this be a waste because the teeth are too fine and can't handle the power? I have heard from some that the boxes are worth big $ and from others $0-$150.....

How much (if anything) should I pay/offer???

    Thanks & hello again...

When they do crop up here, they tend to fetch a pretty good amount of $$.

Its been a while since I have seen one, though. Seems like $400ish is a number that jumps out at me.

That's about half of what he wants - and that's for just the gearbox... Maybe I'll make an offer of $400 for the gearbox & diff and see if he bites. If not I'll pass on it and email him back in a year and try again :-)

      Thanks!!!

When did you get another 2002 tj? Hows the MS coming along?

winston - put the gears in a 320i case and mate it to an m20 2002.

HEY PAT! you're sick in the head!! that's not a half bad idea tho... I've always had 3 02's. One has been in the family and is really close to the way it rolled off the assy line back in 76 so it stays in storage... MS is coming along but hit a major problem... the 02's driveline shat the bed last weekend (hence the purchase of the e30). I'm cutting up 4222580 Saturday and going to start stripping out the 71 2002 and building a cage. ToddK (on the FAQ) bought the DOM and we're going to finish up his widebody 02 then get to work on my 71.

This e30 stuff is like a whole new world to me... No idea what to do with myself now!

I'm looking for some kind of evidence to present to this guy to explain to him that the m20 dogleg boxes are fragile and aren't really worth the $800 he's asking. If he would go down to $400 for the box & the 3.45 diff I'd buy them in a second and put them in either the e30 or maybe even the 2002...

Looks like my MS project may end up going into the e30 eventually. I just purchased myself an eta short block and I'm thinking of a number between 3,000cc and 3,200cc for the new stroked m20....

I have never heard that the e21 dogleg trannies were weak or fragile. I have seen them sell for over $1000

getrag 245 boxes have fine teeth and small bearings. They can oval at the input and output shaft bores and the bearings tend to fail under prolonged use at heavy loads. I'm talking about full track cars leaving the ground and landing where the wheelspeed is different from travel speed. This shreds the CR gearboxes. Rally or Race boxes are the same bearings.

I'm not sure about the m20 box as it's a different one-piece unit that will only mate to the m20 (I believe). Just wondering how they are. Someone mentioned on the 2002faq that they are weak and not worth that much while others here mention they go for high dollars but nothing is said about their durability. I'll mostly use this for street/DD but would like to have the option of using it on the track at a later date. I don't want to spend the $ unless it's a stout unit that can take a stroked M20's power. This car comes with an impressive list of mods and a dyno sheet to match - giving me reason to worry IMHO.

NO WAY! not bailing on anything... just taking a break. Megan wanted a car that she can drive, with power steering & brakes. Oh and one that dosen't need a can of ether to start every time the sun goes down :-)

I'm still building the setup for the 2002 just going to work on the 71 I bought and keep looking for another clean square tail. I may have a lead on some parts for you but as of now I only have one complete set. I even traded two 84mm s14 cranks for one GOOD 87mm EVO crank... going to build a stroked 2.3L M10 with early e21 intake, big valves, pauter rods, forged pistons, knife edge crank, 304 cam, etc. Going all out on this one.

I'm not going anywhere just getting in over my head with another car. Going to the pick & pull with ToddK Saturday so I'll be on the lookout for you.

The getrag 265 (c/r M30/S14 bellhousing) is practically bombproof. To my knowledge, the 26x series boxes are stronger than the 24x series boxes.
