I love my Z3 1.9 in my 325is. The PO of my ETA put in a B&M shifter and I like the 30 dollar shifter from my 325is alot more, it is less notchy...

The older cars that used the sheetmetal shift carriers can be taken apart. Once they switched to the alluminum shift carrier, the levers were sold as a one piece unit.Erik,
Not trying to be argumentative but how so?

The Z's are built the same way. There are circlips and snap rings holding the lower section in the upper section. I've done this many times with e21, e30 & 2002 shifters. It's possible that the Z's are different (I don't know so I can't speculate) but I know that our cars' (e30) shifters can be rebuilt for a better feel. There are even some that sell delrin or urethane internal bushings for a more firm shift at the expense of much vibration.
Please educate me if I am mistaken.
If you look here at the Z3 shift lever, you will see that the lever is sold as one piece. You no longer are able to take it apart easily and replace certain pieces.
