The car pictured here is not a 930. Looks like an '87 - '89 911 Carrera to me.
A Porsche is my next car. I have waited and waited and I'm not waiting too much longer. In the last 2 years I have put just about $200k into a complete home remodel/rebuild. I am almost done and the Porsche is NEXT.
From all the looking and research I've done, I think the P-car to own is either the '87-'89 911 (g50 transmission, better ventilation, cooler/better H4 headlights) or the '95 - '98 993 Carrera 2 6spd.
Find the cleanest, best kept, most well maintained one you can afford and have a slush fund set aside for repairs.
Whats the cheapest reputable porsche you can buy?

I would say 944 Turbo but it sounds like you want a status symbol.

Buying a cheap 911 is asking for trouble.Leave a comment:

No love for the boxster?
Just curious why there seems to be a universal hate for the the Boxster? I was considering getting one in a year or so until I can afford my Cayman which I think just look sweet as hell. So how about it. What is wrong with the Boxsters?Leave a comment:

the price of early 90s NA carreras are resonable, under 20k.
I dont know shot about them though, except they look hot as shit.Leave a comment:

+1 you want a driving experience? Get a bike like that and you'll never look back!
All VERY SMART advice. I have no idea what your financial situation is, how old you are, etc. but you already have the Ultimate Driving Machine (although no longer) why screw it up?
On a side note IMO the 944 is a very under rated car. The engineering in them is really cool if you've been around them at all. The rear suspension is really amazing, the driveline is uber cool (they have front engine with torque tube & rear gearbox) and it's all very adjustable from ride height to mods. I know a guy who's into 911's and 44 race cars. The standard 8v motor can make you happy but IMO not all that much more than a well prepped e30. Weight distribution will be better (maybe) but what do you really want? A money pit 944 or a pristine 911?
Boxter = sh*t IMO... save up, buy a house, get a 911 if/when you can afford one. Go big or go home & the 944 makes a great track car but on the street has the stigma of the "poor man's Porsche" till it blows your doors off!! Some of the parts in the 944 are interchangable with Audi/VW but the 944 isn't that much more than our cars. Be honest though - you want a classy 911 like a 71 911 right? Save up, keep driving the e30 and put your money into a 401k or IRA so you can retire at 55 and actually drive the damn thing somewhere other than TO WORK!Leave a comment:

930 is and was the best. for 10 to 15k you can get a very nice one.
We picked one up last week that had an oil leak... was a $2 seal for the oil pressure sending unit. Someone else did a PPI before us, the shop added up $7000 of repairs, involving the oil leak and other minor things...
Here is the car. $2 is all we have spent to get it running... I don't forsee anything else for a while.

Listed Price: $18000
Purchase Price: $10000Leave a comment:

You already know the answer. A 911. It was the "it" car in socal when I was a kid.
My friends Dad had a new one , we got to take it to Tahoe one time. Got to drive it on sports car roads.
Made my Datsun roadster look like a tinker toy.-SteveLeave a comment:

The Gold Plated Porsche is a good book, just one of many I read researching my possible 911 purchase. You won't learn a whole lot about the car from that book, but it's a fantastic story.
The Used 911 Story is probably your best book for a 911 purchase. However, my best suggestion to learn about any model is to read Pelican Parts' message boards. Just search for things like 'cheap 944' or 'entry level 911' or something like that, should get you several threads. Don't post a new one asking the same question as they'll likely ignore you. Some really, really good info over there.Leave a comment:

Careful, I might just take you up on that.Take the day off work and come out the the Porsche track day on the 27th. I can get you a ride of two in a P-car if you want then you can tell me that they are all dickheads. I do agree that most of them don't work on their own cars. Rothsport has to love these people.

I'm reffering to stuff from the factory. I know you can re-seal those motors and have them stay leak free. Maintenance also plays a big role in that. Old oil is old oil, even if it only has 800 miles on it.
Also James, not saying you're totally out to lunch. Just disagreeing with the notion that they're not that much more expensive to maintain than a BMW. I love them as much as the next enthusiast, don't get me wrong.Leave a comment:

I have never seen people (gross generalization warning) who think that their car has so much to do with who they are. When I go to the Porsche club tent area at the races (non-911's have to park on the edges of course) the elitist vibe just gives me the creeps. The majority of them never having worked on a car, arguing about whether it is a '77 or '78 because they changed the tail light lens manufacturer and the air cleaner bolt is nickel plated. I know I'm asking for it.
