For shizzle. Yuppies in the 80's were more than willing to shell out big bucks for pretty much any service the dealership offered, it meant more chances to show up at the dealership and more chances to spend money on the Bimmer.Comment

Thats the same mindset that the American "Big 3" auto makers tried to run on us back in the 70's. In fact, cars back then had a 5-digit odometer because they KNEW their cars would not make it to 100K. The concept was that you would drive the car for a couple of years at the most and then get the new model. After 50K it was time for a new car.

And that was the REAL reason for the SI lights in the cluster. I am sure that if they had access to the technology that gave them the ability to secretly move up your service intervals to a sooner time period, I am sure they would have. "...oh no Mr. Smiggins- You don't need an oil change just yet- We just need to inspect the car." and while you are waiting you see all of the roundel pariphnalia that is screaming "BUY ME!"Comment

Close. Lifetime transmission oil. BMW actually goes pretty crazy with maintenance in newer cars. I do so many brake and coolant flushes on cars that don't need them, but the car says it needs it, and it's covered under maintenance warranty. BMW is smart though. When the warranty expires, customers will continue to bring them to the dealer for maintenance because many independent shops won't know how to reset the condition based service indicators. :psigpicComment
