My car's new weight savings technique...

So last fall, during my fight with mono (before you laugh, I nearly died from it...) I had nothing else to do so I figured I'd do a serious cleaning of my car. Once I had the seats and carpeting out it just seem logical to remove some of the sound deadening and start shedding some weight. I stopped before it got too out of hand (probably because I fell asleep) but my car seemed to have liked the idea based on it's behaviour today.

I never did get to shave much weight off the front end so my car decided to do the work for me and started by ejecting the aft-most spark plug. I discovered it was loose yesterday so I tightened it up and went on my way but today was not so simple.

    TicktickticktickPopPopPopPopPOPPOPPOPPOPKAPOW!!

Fortunately the spark plug somehow landed on my exhaust pipes so at least I still have it but the threads on the head are completely stripped. I'm not sure what my options are now but I'm hoping I can somehow use this as an excuse to do my motor swap...

After all, you know what they say: The light at the end of the tunnel is an M52... :D

We had this happen in one of the cars me and my dad was working on...might have been the MGB but I can't remember.

We had it filled/ redrilled or something like that. I dont' know how the motor guy did it but he did. Worked great afterward, no problems. I can be done but don't think its a minor thing. I could be wrong though

So I know this doesn't help that much but I will ask my dad to see what the motor man did.

Yeah, if it involves pulling the head it's basically worth it for me to just put in the extra hours and swap the motor. The money that I'd probably spend having a machine shop plug and retap the head I'm sure could be spent on a 5 series oilpan and an OBD1 wiring harness.

M20 heads are cheap, but I still say go with the swap!

I have a grand saved so far, and an M52 already, worth the time perhaps?

I can pull the head myself, and if needed I even have a spare M20 head I could use instead, but it just seems like if I'm going to dive into the engine bay that much I really should just get the swap done now...?

doo eeeeeett m52 swappage ftw. Im getting sick of my tickbox m20. btw the m5X/s5x series motors are gonna be the motor to build soon or later, so if you wanted to go big, it shouldnt be a problem.

                        Do eeeet NOW!!

I've never done it but there are helicoil spark plug kits so it's definitely doable an d since the plugs are pretty accessible you shouldn't have to remove anything I wouldn't think. Just gotta hope the metal shavings from boring out the hole don't cause any problems.

It's a can of worms - do the s52 - it will be off the road for the same amount of time. It took me a week with everything i had to do when i pulled my engine in my 02 to helicoil (ended up replacing the head) a stripped head. However, mine turned out to be a stripped helicoil in a helicoil. Hopefully you wont be so unfortunate.
