I don't even like going 120 on the freeway, 165 is just plain stupid.

Haha nice. I didn't think they could go that fast. My A4, although not an S4, would push the pedal back at me at 125 it wasn't chipped though so maybe that is why. First and last time I went over 100mph in it, like you said its just not safe on any street or highway.

Well, 120 can be done relatively safely if you are semi intelligent, and the conditions are ideal.
Dont get me wrong, Ive got places to be, things to do... I am known to cruise the highway between 80 and 90. 165 is actually retarded though.

I don't know anything about S4's, can they even do that kind of speed. And i seen he said he had his late 80's Trans Am to 155-160. IIRC the speedo only goes to 145 in those cars and the top speed of them was only around 145mph.

I think you're taking that a bit too seriously... granted his common sense and maturity show in the responses to some other members in that thread, but I still think its all good for the guy to try to kill himself as long as it's on an open road and not swerving in traffic.

It's not like people do 165 all day long. And even then, there are many cars out there that can do 165 nowadays. The weakest link is the driver in most cases.

at 165 quality of highway maintenance becomes a huge issue as well. Road debris? Bird to the windshield? Drop a valve?

Personally I think most of what you just mentioned can be avoided if you do it properly. Under daylight conditions and looking well ahead, one could easily avoid many hassles. The main problem in the US's fault is that most drivers dont look beyond their own hood emblem (sometimes even beyond their own sun visor's mirror)

The German Autobahn & their driver's ed program is a great example of that. People usually cant see farther than "driving at top speed", but what Germany pulls off is designing a car that is able to do that, a proper highway to do that and most importantly, sucessfully training a human being to be able to drive at that speed.

With the right tires and suspension, and enough clear straight road. You should be fine.

If it the road is EMPTY and condition of the car / road is OK then sure you can probably go that fast but IF anything goes wrong most drivers won't walk away from it....

How many times has he gone 165. Once. He was not prepared to go 165. Go 165 on the track. A lot. Then you might not be deemed as a bragging POS when you do it on the street. Like it was said earlier its all in the experience of the driver. Too bad you will never get enough experience to be ready for a top speed run. Go to Bonneville for that stuff. If you cant make it to Bonneville then you aren't worthy.

Tekademics, specifically Dado, brought DTM down a long time ago.

165 mmm, done 140 (speedo, not timed, so i can't say it was exact) in my 1973 trans am in the early eighties, on the road from Santiago to Arica, at the time it was recently repaired, vitually desrted and had (still has) straights of more than 100 miles, but if you ask me, I did it because i was 18 at the time and mildly retarded (as most 18 year olds are when it comes to highway speed) I had belted 245 60 14 Bf Goodrichs and the car felt well at that speed in a straight line, if I'm not mistaken it took me more than a 1/2 a mile to stop, I guess with better brakes and geometry it might not be psycho to do it, but now at 40 I'm not willing to go above 100 mph. Also, there are a lot more cars on the roads nowadays. ;)

Good ole PNW dtm section. Always good for rich spoiled kids who never have worked a hard days labor in their lives...
Thanks joe for the great reminder why I stopped watching DTM PNW section, just reaffirms that I made a good choice for leavin that crowd.
Edit: BTW Joe, I like how the last thing that got posted was ur charles darwin comment, awesome parting thought as they closed the thread.

I'm 19 and I still say that's a stupid idea, shows the intelligence or maturity difference, I'll let u decide on that one
