    WTB: E30 Mechanic Socal

I have a 91 318is that needs some tender love and care including some fluid changes and some bushings, was wondering if anyone local to San Diego you guys can recommend (yourself?) to do the work.

Otherwise, will have to bring it to BMW Service Specialist in Little Italy San Diego but the prices still seem kinda high for an indy.

I can supply/buy the parts and pay fair labor.

email is the best way to get a hold of me, flypenfly AT gmail.com

Email Brian, SpecraceM5. Very cool guy. He can get parts cheap too since his buddy work at BMW part counter.

I think I might actually keep it but I'm not 100% on that yet.

Whatever you do, don't take it to BMW Service Specialists/Gary Dodd. He's a crook.

Really? why do u say that? I recently took both the 325is and the M3 to him recently, just for oil changes though... he's extremely convininient because the place is only 3 blocks from me.

                  What happened?

                  quick google search:

It's good that you're a budding mechanic -- you'll save a lot of money. When I would visit my mechanic (they're the best I've ever worked with -- a San Diego indie called BMW Service Specialists -- Gary Dodd, the manager, is completely devoted to BMWs),
They did overfill my oil though on the 325is and I had to go get an extractor to get the oil out because the E30 was starting to smoke a bit in the exhaust. Very inconvenient.

You own 3 bimmers and you pay someone else to change your oil? And they f$@# it up anyways?! Sorry, but that's kinda funny, and pathetic at the same time.

Don't have the time or space (live in downtown) to do it myself. I'm also lazy and hate physical labor and the frustrations of automotive maintenance.

Gary is a crook. My dad took his E12 528i and then his E32 735iL to Gary for years, and once I got into BMWs and started to look into the services Gary was selling my dad, we were both shocked.

I always tell people this: Gary Dodd is the type of person who will, when your car is in for service, tell you that you need new brakes, even if yours are at half of their life. He will then sell you new brakes at full price, install them, and turn around and tell one of his other customers who really DOES need brakes "Hey, I your car needs brakes and I have a set of used ones that will work fine...I'll throw them on there and give you a great deal on them".

He's a theif. My dad no longer takes his car anywhere near Gary Dodd. I don't either, of course.

BTW, my dad managed to warp the heads on two BMW motors -- the one in his E12 and the one in his E32. Gary, instead of recommending he have the head deck surfaced or a new head installed, told my dad that he needed whole new crate engines from BMW both times. My dad, not knowing much about BMW maintenance at that time, went along, to the tune of $5k+ each time.

Sorry to discourage you, but it's the truth. Gary might have at one point been a BMW enthusiast, but at this point he's a greedy bastard.

EDIT: I should add that I even worked at BMW Service Specialists on India Steet for a time, unpaid, just to lend a hand. Jim, the manager there at the time, was a super cool guy and they were very busy, so I would just come down most days and get to work doing brakes and water pumps and such. I was freelancing as a photo assistant and it was slow, but I was making enough money to pay the bills, so working at BMW Service Specialists was just a way to kill some time.

Sounds like a lot of indy mechanics...
