    M5 vs. 318is

As the title states, I finally had a chance to run an E39 M5. The car is my friend Eric's fathers, and he let Eric have drive the M5 while he was out of town. It's a black/modena '00 M5, with an Active Autowerk intake and Supersprint exhaust, plus a short shift kit.

We lined them up several times on a road coming back from dinner. We had 2 people in each car.

1st pull: 40-80, 2nd-3rd gear. I immediately got the jump on him and walked him through 3rd, about 2 carlengths.

2nd run: stoplight. :P We rolled off and both hit it off-idle in 1st. The fresh rear tires didn't squirm a bit, as went through the top of 3rd gear. Pulled about 2-3 carlengths on him there.

3rd run: 20-100+, 2nd-4th gears. He was in front of me, we both hit it in 2nd. I closed the gap up until about 90, then we were even until just over 110.

Remember that the '00 M5 has 2.93 gears, and the '01+ got a 3.15. The stock flywheel in the M5 is 39 pounds, and the car itself is well over 3500. But, it's nice to know that I can roll past the big-dogs at 'around town' speeds.

It's great to hear the S52 is tearing up mofos.

But it's funny how no one mentions how this is a "kill story" nor does anyone complain that it encourages street racing.........just saying......

                But regardless, that's tight.

Stu, I hate to break it to you, but your car is fucking weak.

Just saying, you should stop lying. Everyone here knows that a 1.6L diesel will obviously NOT beat a 394hp E39 M3, with a power to weight ratio of 1:10, where you're sitting at 1:20 tops with your 91bhp.

Be honest with yourself man, your car is slow.

Somebody needed to give you the wakeup call.
My mountains are better than yours.

Sweet! Why to take down the big dog. I think we should work up another western NC meet so I can see that beast. Although I think my car has an inferiority complex now.

Yea, it was fun. I don't race people that often, but I just needed to know where I stood compared to the quad-VANOS, raging 4.9L.

Sickness. The 00 M5 may have lower gears, but with the intake and exhaust he was probably pushing 40 more horsepower then stock.

Note to self: When you buy an M5 make sure you swap in 3.15 gears if it is an 00.
