You left out strip clubs or XXX Bookstores. Just drive around and look for places that have signs out front with nekkid ladies on them- like "Thee Dollhouse" or "Scandals" or "Cheetah's" also "Aphrodite's Adult Entertainment" or "Pegasus Books and Videos". Run in and tell everyone you have big heavy crankshaft and you need someone to pick your cherry. If they tell you to go into a small room with a video screen- do it!! If there's a round hole in one of the walls in that room- stick your dick in it, trust me. If you don't want to do that, then put your bare ass over the hole and yell "I'm ready to have my cherry picked!!!!".

I hear this is the best way to handle your dilemma.

Harbor freight probably has them cheaper.

If the rental yard does not have an engine hoist, you could probably rent an overhead chain host pully mechanism.. if you have open joists in your garage, get a long steel pipe or 3 beams of wood.. 2x6 stacked the long way and make sure that the support is long enough to distribute the weight across more than 2 or 3 joists. I dont know what a fork lift or a front end loader rents for but that is another option.

And if all else fails, hire a group of crackheads to lift it out by hand. Pay them $5 each to get on both sides of a 3 inch pipe and then wrap your chain around it. They can lift the engine out by doing a squat lift. An M20 engine couldnt weigh THAT much.

Mike325 bought an M20 from me and unloaded it from his truck by hand. It was stripped of its accessories, but otherwise complete from pan to valve cover. I think it weighs around 220 or something with no accessories.

However, I would not advise removing the engine from the bay by hand. I don't see how that's possible without some kind of pulley at the very least. I think renting a cherry picker will be the way to go.

Anyone ever rented a cherry picker or engine hoist before? How much does it cost per day?

^depends where you go. They can be had pretty cheaply and it may be in your best interest to just buy one for a couple hundred bucks and never worry about it again.

Or you can buy a 25cent packet of seeds and wait a few years.

Usually Harbor Freight has them for a good price. Last time they had them on sale they came with an engine stand, too.

If you buy one, think about where you will store it. I wish I had bought one that folded up - I have to take it apart each time I'm done with it.

Bingo. I bought the Harbor Freight fold-up model, and it is the same as the NAPA one, just diff color paintjob. Excellent quality for $150.

I rented before I bought mine, and the 3-ish times I did, it was $40 - $75, depending on how big / how much of a hurry I was in. If you can coordinate in advance, the rental joints give you a break on Sunday rentals, so if you pickup on a Sat. & return on a Mon. morning, you get a slight surcharge over a standard 1 day rate.

Look in the yellow pages in your local phone book under 'rentals'.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

yes, but expect to throw it away after using it 3 times.
