GS-D3's....not so hot at the track

As some may have gathered, I spent this past Sat at LRP for a spirited day of driving around with a multitude of Porsches. All in all, the day was great. Had a blast in the M3, and turned some pretty decent lap times. Unfortunately, my practically new (650 miles) Goodyear GS-D3's couldn't keep up so much. Chunking was a huge problem in the afternoon session, and I came away less than impressed. Granted, they could have used a little more pressure (cold was 37), but I was without my trusty Tire Gauge, and thus up a creek. Ambient temp was 62 with sun, and I can't imagine the track temp was above 80. So, without further ado, here's the damage, and now I am left to wonder if I can run them again.....(All damage was to the front left, suprise, suprise)

      OMG that is awful!

Hopefully these AVS hold up well, the Sp9000s did the last couple years of beating the crap out of them in 100 degree heat.

        Ryan,

If you are running ES100's, you ought to be fine. I ran those last season, and they withstood a shellacking at Nelson Ledges when they were practically new. I wanted to venture into the Max-Performance category, and was let down in a big way. Nothing like spending $133 on a tire that lasts all of one day.

Well I can tell you that the Dunlops will be plenty grippy and last fine. The bad thing is they are $$$. All I ever suffered was feathering on the edges, no chunks.

            damn that sucks...
I know they are sticky street tires, and I havn't had any issues with them over the last 4k miles... did you get the 245/35's or 235/40's?
I wouldn't track my M3 on 17's, I would have to go with stock wheels and good track tires for that.

              Yikes!
That really sucks Will. I'm guessing that kind of thing isn't covered under warranty, because you were at the track, right?

What are you going to try next for tires? S03's?

                Boys,

I didnt get either. I went with 215/40/17's. The 6 Kosei's I have are currently laden with burnt out track rubber, and I didnt want to spend the loot on new street tires and new track tires, so I tried to get by with a hybrid...and failed miserably. It now looks like I may not have much option. I am thinking about the RA-1's, which supposedly last forever, or maybe Victoracers. Either way, I am in need of some more camber, so the TMS fixed mounts may be in order, as I am looking at JS in a year of two. Either way, I should have known better then to run 1.06's at LRP with basically new tires. FWIW, the top JS guys run 1.02.xx with race rubber.
