    The S42 Thread

Thought this could do with its own thread:

The S42 came in different versions, here is some data on the 8/1995 evolution:

    Pic:

    Bore / Stroke: 86,5mm / 85mm
    Displacement: 1998ccm
    Compression ratio:12.4
    Rod length: 145mm
    Intake cam degree / spread: 312 / 94
    Exhaust cam degree / spread: 304 / 98
    Intake valve diameter: 35mm
    Exhaust valve diameter: 35mm
    Intake dimensions: 52mm wide / 29.7mm height / 14.85mm radius
    Slide throttle diameter: 46mm
    Carbon airbox
    Exhaust manifold: 4-2
    Engine management: ecu4a.1

    Pic:

    Performance: (DIN 70020)
    285hp at 8300rpm
    245nm at 7000rpm
    max rpm: 8500rpm
Petrol quality: Super plus ROZ 98

Now, compare this to the late spec (think bathurst 98): this engine was re-mapped not by BMW-Motorsport, but by Mclaren:

I would take that motor for a swap into my car over any other BMW motor.

          Yes, even over an S38.

I would do unbelievable things to get my hands on one of those.

As much as i would like to get my hands on one of those also, i couldnt see that engine being enjoyable to drive on the street...

yeah, 8500 rpms.. i bet it would sound alot better than an s2000.

What cars did this engine go into?

so 285 hp from a 4 cylinder... not bad at all.

That was a race only engine destined for the E36 sedans of the various 2.0 liter touring car series of the era .

Yes 285 is a lot from a 4cyl ...but today the top racing teams are getting upwards of 350bhp from the S14....although they are of the 2.5 variety .

that is very sexy, and i would put that in a street car, but not as a daily.

Stop putting ideas that my wallet frowns upon into my head.

On second thought, LTW wallet mod = faster car!

Thanks for posting the pics. From the looks of it, it looks like the M42 cylinder head casting was used in the S42. 35mm exhaust valves are huge (stock 30.5mm).

I remember reading that the S42 had a broader torque curve than the S14, both in 2.0L trim

Did the BMW 320 STW use the S42?

                              Heres a video for reference...
