    Laptop recommendations, please.

I'm looking into buying a computer for myself before I start school this fall. I've always been a Mac guy myself, and my family has always had them, but since I'll be using it for school and for tuning using an SMT-6, I think I'm going to have to get a PC.

It seems that Dells have the best ratings on all the "review" sites, but what would you guys recommend? I'm not really into gaming or anything, but I would eventually like to be able to do some CAD and stuff, so I'm looking for something with power. And I would like something with a bigger screen, as I'm used to the 21" monitor at home and my girlfriend's 17" Powerbook.

    Thanks in advance.

I like my Dad's Dell with the Centrino Processor. They are great for laptops, way better than P4's or P3's IMO. I also like the Sony Vios, your choice man. Good luck

That's a shame you have to get a PC.

The new 1.5GHz PBG4's are tits. I'm going to wait until October to pic up a PBG5, myself and sell the iBook G4.

My one recommendation on the PC side of things: Avoid the Toshiba Satellite line. Tara has one, and it is the biggest piece of shit laptop I've ever experienced in my life. It's a couple years old now, so maybe they've re-vamped it, but dayum.

My friend has an HP/Compaq, and loves it. If I were getting a PC laptop, I'd probably pick one of those up. I believe it's the Compaq x1000, maxed out with options.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys. It is too bad that I have to get a PC, but it just makes sense. Plus, Powerbooks are damn expensive.

True, but I can't justify spending that kind of money on a computer when I could be getting a M50, or Mtech 2 kit, or new paint job.

My next laptop will be a 1.5ghz powerbook 15inch

however as you must have a PC, then go with an IBM Thinkpad

the new dells are really poorly built, nothing like how my Inspiron 8200 was.

                    IBM Thinkpad = BEST PC
                    Powerbook = everything else :D

I said the same thing until I bought one

I use my G4 1.25 for EVERYTHING except gaming, does a kickass job, and I have a BSD terminal when I want one

Get a Mac Powerbook and then a serial adapter, and VPC.

I do feel your pain, as I to am a Mac guy and have a PC laptop for my M.

I also have a Toshiba laptop that I will sell you cheap!!
                          15in screen
                          I think a 1.2 or a 1.5 P4
                          1gig ram
                          20gig HD
                          Win XP
                          Office XP

From what I understand, USB - Serial adapters wont work with the SMT6

                              My oppinion:

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite A45-S151. Like it a lot. Decent battery life (2.5 hours I think), bright clear screen with no burnt pixels, and its relatively light. I bought it purely for writing papers and 'net surfing while at school, so I didn't want to blow a whole wad of cash on a powerhouse laptop. In short, it fits my needs and didn't lighten my pocket that much.

My buddy has an HP, and he's had some problems with the touch pad and various buttons.

My brother-in-law just bought a Dell decked out with a widescreen, DVD burner, etc. Nice laptop, but something like that was more than I needed. The key to buying a Dell is waiting until you can get a good deal.

IBM Thinkpads rock, altho they are on the expensive side.
