Trunk Lock Cylinder Jammed In "In" Position...

My buddy had a little problem with his '90 325is today.

His little brother was trying to unlock his trunk and somehow got the trunk button stuck in the "In" position. Not only that, but the trunk is locked and won't open.

What's the best bet? How can we open the trunk?

happened to me like 8 months ago, the good thing is I'm small enough to fit through the ski tunnel and unbolt the latch. I put it all back together and its been fine ever since.

This is probably going to sound like a stupid suggestion, but have you tried putting the key back into the lock and hooking it to try to pull it back out? Happened on an old ETA we once had, with a little force it came back out. Not sure what was wrong with it but dismantling it and cleaning it out seemed to fix it.

Same thing happened to me as well, but I had important work documents inside when it happened(and no cool ski cutout in the back) My solution was brute force basically. I took one of my spare keys(the half key if I recall correctly) a pair of needle nose pliers, and just worked at that sumbitch till it eventually popped open.

Only problem is, it's still in the same situation is was before, but I left it in the unlocked position so I wouldn't have to deal with it anymore. I've just been too lazy to take apart the cylinder and find out what the deal is. But that was my solution. I guess opening is the first step though, after that...I'm no help.

I didn't have my ski tunnel removed before that :(

I wish I didn't have to take it out but I had a all my stuff in the trunk, just got back from a trip...

Yep. Can't get the button to pop back out. I tried for a good 15 minutes, using tools (not just the key).

Penetrating oil, and a flathead with a slight hook. Same thing happened to my first e30, after a solid hour of fucking around it popped out.

              Keep it slideways!!

can you just spray some sorta lube on it?

that solution works for many, if not all of lifes problems:pimp:

Hah. His friend's dad had tried WD40 before we got there. I'm thinking the next step requires a REALLY BIG DRILL. One of my friends suggested a screw and a slide hammer. Bwahahaha...

even if you needed to drill it out, you wouldnt need a big drill. just large enough to bore out all the wafers. 1/2'' drill bit should do the job if you hit it straight down the middle. but even still, there's no garentee that it will release it

Why are you trying to ruin my fun? I was thinking BIG drill, and if that doesn't work, then I'll bust out this baby:

Did you try locking and unlocking the system via the lock knob on the door? Might pop it loose.

I heart air tools, that thing works great for separating control arms from the strut.
