I pretty much identified all the wires, except having a hard time with the crankshaft sensor wire, the ECU diagram i have says its a Black wire, i have like 2 thick Black wires that runs in the center of all the wiring. I dont see no thin black wire in there. Also i found two Brown\Orange wires wich its supposed to be a Ground.

Help ??

The smt6 can be used as a standalone ignition system, very easy on your cars with one coil,

I always try and use the pinout numbers when doing any elextrical work along with wire colors,

SKAT : I would not try and work in the smt6 while not having a laptop, cause your car will not start as you have not set the global settings in the smt6 unit

I am still trying to work a vanos tuning, will se how that will work,
Fuel is no problem to tune with a O2 hooked up,

One problem solver is, if you can not use the ignition wire to get rpms, yoiu can use the tacho wire it´s black and on ´88- cars it runs into the C101 plug, just do a continuity test to find it at the ecu,

I really like what you have done Mspiegle with the shorting plug to be able to remove the smt6 anytime, for resale or install into another vehicle,

Well actually my brother has a laptop that i can borrow, i just want one for my own to work on the car.

By the way, im also looking for the speed signal wire, supposedly its a Black-White wire wich i cant find anywhere.

@skat325is, you can't just look @ the wiring in that area, i actually took the ecu connector apart. Some of the wires on the ecu go out the backside of the connector, then group up into some of those larger cables. I found it easier to open the connector, tap the wire inside the plastic connector housing, then drill a hole to let the wires out:



The RPM signal is the black one there. I believe it is pin number 47. If you're looking inside the connector, its a black and yellow wire right next to each other. The will be locates on the BOTTOM row of pins and be almost in the middle.

the orange one is for lambda.

May i ask how do i take the connector appart, i dont see how, just 3 screws that pretty much dont do anything as far i can see.

SMT6

Hi.

just stumbled accross this topic here by accident :)...

I own a 1986 e30 325i and am definitely going for the SMT6 after the engine is put back together again after some serious mods + turbo.

What I am kindof wondering about is how to tune the SMT6....

Concerns...
1) My car originally has no O2 sensor at all..
2) The ECU is a Bosch 0 261 200 081 with only 2 rows of pins in the connector

I know I can make the fuel maps with a O2 sensor and a A/F meter hooked up I think after countless hours test-driving it, but that is only at WOT.. I mean the A/F shows me some results only at WOT....

Some more things I plan to do befor the SMT6 installation that kindof give me a hard time at the moment and I would appreciate if anyone can share their opinion-ideas with these:
a) custom intake manifold with about 22" runners and a bigger plenum + 12 19# injectors (2 per cylinder) and hopefully I will find a switch to use either 6 or 12 injectors depending on boost or rpm...
b) oil squirters to the pistons from a 7-series bmw

ask gunni, he would know better. you can make the SMT6 works on just about any car though, unfortunately its limited to your ECU. Maybe stand-alone management woudl be better for you.

hmm...my ecu does have a 37 pin (power) its green \ red if i remember correctly, you sure you didnt read the diagram backwards ?

i don't remember the details anymore, i'm pretty sure i tried both from left to right, and backwards just to make sure i wasn't looking @ the schematic wrong. I ended up using the hot for the starter or something like that.

Have you wired your smt6 in? or just identifying wires?

Well today i hooked up partialy the smt6, first wired up Power and Ground, fired it up, communication established with smt6 and laptop, powered off.

Then i proceded with the V.A.F sensor, now im not sure how do i know its working. In the installation manual says that that i should push the gas pedal and im supposed to see some deflection numbers, but i push the pedal and dont see anything, its stuck in 4.7% or something like that. Is there some option i need to enable withing the programor what ??

I still need to hook up the pink and yellow wires by the way.

if i remember correctly, AFM wires on the SMT6 unit were blue and purple. The Blue was in and purple was out.

If you merely tap the blue wire to the AFM signal wire, you should be able to see a fluctuating AFM voltage in the SMT6 software.

When you're ready to tune AFM signal, have the AFM signal intercepted on the blue wire, then sent back out on the purple wire.

As for deflection, the M20 doesn't have a variable TPS (as i understand it). It uses a switch (which is either idle or WOT). So, as an alternative, you get your deflection signal from the AFM. Since the afm provides higher voltages when you're on the throttle (because it has to draw in air) it will be good enough. Just tap into the AFM signal with the deflection wire. Aparently this workaround will allow you to get some of your tuning done, but it is far from ideal. Installing a variable TPS from an e36 and faking the WOT/Idle signals should make this thing run really nice.

Yea i noticed the deflection changing when i finished hooking up the crank sensor wires and cranked the car on. I took the car out for a short spin, it running kinda hesistant in high rpms, im not sure if i left out any settings to be changed on the smt6.

At least my biggest worry was if the car would turn on :)

Now i need to figure out why is it running like crap.
