    TBelt/water pump jobber details...

ok, so I need my water pump and tbelt replaced. I got a quote from German auto here in SLO for $340, plus I bring my own parts. Now Im not debating that, I thikn it seems fair. What Im disputing is what all they are doing. For the $340, they are needing water pump, tbelt kit, thermostat (and the gaskets), all the belts, cap & rotor, front seals, and valve cover gasket. My question is, why do they need a valve cover gasket? Do they adjust the valves or something i nthis price, or whats up with that? I figure if youre going down there, then do it. but I didnt know the valve cover had to be removed to get to this.

I think the shop I used to work at charged 5 hrs at 75/hr so pretty similar, sounds fair. No need to take off valve cover to do job but if they want to adjust the valves for you and change the gaskets I wouldn't complain.

Pretty much a major service, and if that is what they are doing then HELLA yes!
(I said that on purpose......... look on words you hate thread)
So they will be more than likely adjusting valve lash. Actually that is very reasonable if it is a major service.

Oh Im not disputing the price, it sounds very fair. I just didnt know WTF was up with the valve cover gasket being on the list of required parts. And I wont DIY, because I dont know how to work on cars, and dont have shit for tools. I do change my own oil though lol.

I did my waterpump myself having almost no experience working on cars before. It was quite a challenge and at least somewhat a pain in the ass, but I regret none of it. I learned more about my car during that time than ever.

That's actually a pretty good price for them to do all of that if you bring in your own parts. But, if you take in your own parts just remember this, they cannot necessarily warranty the parts because, although they may be new, they don't know where you got them from. That is standard practice at the shop I work at.

Well, it will be warrantied. Since I work at a parts store that supplies them with half of their shit lol. And It'll all be solid parts... Behr Therm, Conti belt kit, Graf water pump, gates belts, Bosch Cap & Rotor, Reinz gaskets, etc.

AGAINNNNNN. Im not disputing the price....... Im just wondering why the hell doI need to bring a valve cover gasket.

BEEECCAAUUSSEEEE the old one may break of get torn when they take the valve cover off. It is better for the shop to change out a cheap part than have you come back later complaining that you valve cover is leaking.

Adjusting valve lash is the same a valve adjustment. The distance between the top of the valve stem and the rocker is set to the correct specs.

                        1) Shop is closed

                        2) If theyre adjusting the valves, I figure they will need a valve cover gasket.

I just didnt know this is a routine deal, to adjust the valves, when doing a timing belt change.
