The 1st generation BMW-related MINI used to have a Chrysler motor in them, called Tritec motors. They are pretty much the same motor as in Neons. The motor was designed entirely by Chrysler.

The new motor is at least half designed by BMW, this time around it's a joint development between BMW and Peugeot/Citroen.

I'm thinking about getting one, too. Though mine will be white with a white roof, and black 18s, like this:

Definately no where near a neon motor. Neons had 2.0l and 2.4l engines. The Tritec is a 1.6l. It was a joint venture between BMW and Chrysler.

The new motor is also a joint venture although this time it's BMW and Peugeot (it will be in I believe the 206).

The new motor is as much a BMW engine as the last one. Either way they were both joint ventures and in no way were they one manufacturer's engine.

Yan, I'll let you know (everyone, actually) how I like mine once it gets here. It's on the water now, so I'm guessing I will be able to pick it up on the 18th of this month. I got the sport and premium packages along w/ some LSD.
