What cost am I looking at here? (S50 parts)

I'm considering buying a built S50 head, but it is only partially complete. It looks like I would need the following to complete it:

    Rockers
Cams (probably buy performance cams, anything more reasonable than Schrick?)
Cam and Rocker carriers (saw these on Turner's site for $125 each, available cheaper?)
    Cam gears (just want stock)
    Timing Chain

Where can I source these parts at?...I mean do wreckers part out small internal parts like these? I'd hate to have to buy them all new, that could cost a 2-3 grand.

Ahhh, see you learn something every day. This will be my first engine project, so I'm learning as I go.

Re: What cost am I looking at here? (S50 parts)

OK, it looks like the sprokets/gears can be had for $10-$40 each (used vs. new...much cheaper than I thought they would be).

What do solid lifters and timing chain cost?
Also, I'm still looking for a more reasonable alternative to the $1200 Schrick cams.

Anyone got any ino on these? :?

I have seen stock 95 m3 cams go for around $500, I would check some of the other boards..

whats so "built" about it if its missing all these parts?
if I were you, I would get another head and have work done on it. In the end it will probably cost around the same amount. This way you know exactly whats up with it and you won't end up with some micky mouse hack job of putting things together.

Well it's a spare a guy got with his M3 that he didn't use because he put a turbo on instead. The head was stripped down and cleaned, port/polish job, stainless steel valves, titanium retainers, and dual valve springs. Also comes with the valve cover and vanos unit. I think I can get it for a decent price for what has been put into it, just by looking around at what these parts would cost separately.

300 is a good price compared to what I've seen. What are tappets? Also, anyone know about how much the hydraulic lifters are from the dealer?

just make sure to have more $ set aside, tons of things will pop up...for example lots of random maitnence and some custom work like exhaust and what not
