    Noisy: Clutch or Tranny?

Ok, so I have this weird sound coming from my car.

Before I get into that, yes I searched the forums. I searched "noise" and too many things came up, along with "clutch noise" and "noisy clutch" lol.

Anyhow.... It almost sounds like a clanking sound coming from under my feet. When I engage the clutch it totally goes away. When the car is sitting in neutral, like at a drive through per say, it is noisy. Not noisy enough to bother anyone besides me, since its MY car. Im assuming this may be common, since my 84 318i did the same thing.

WTF is this? Its probably been answered before, but I dont search very well. Google doesnt even help me with anything =\

I am wondering too, as I have the same problem.

More than likely, the throw out bearing is kaput. If there isn't any type of noise while driving and it comes and goes by clutching it.

he says when it is sitting in neutral.

it might be the input shaft bearing, I had a simliar problem, where the noise was only when I was sitting in neutral, and when I clutched in, the noise went away.

To fix MY problem, I changed out the tranny fluid for some Redline Heavyweight Shockproof.

Yes, ONLY when in neutral. Every other time its totally quiet. Mtech, I thought I heard the same thing about the heavier fluid. I thought BMWs used a fluid which was too light, and putting some thicker redline fluid in there would help fix it.

the Redline Heavyweight Shockproof is more of a very effective bandaid.

Reason being is that in order to replace the bearing on the transmission's input shaft on a Getrag 260, you'd have to pull apart the transmission, and once you get to that point, you'd better be fixing more than just a bearing, to make it worth the effort.

                Two options:
                A) Go spend $150-250 on another tranny
                B) Change fluid to Redline Heavyweight Shockproof

I was told it was an idler arm or some crap. I have had that noise for years, nothing wrong says my friend (master mechanic and e30 owner) just me being a girl.

My car made this noise too. When I did the i swap I put in a brand new throwout bearing in there. Lasted about 2 weeks before the new one started making noise! For those confused, the throwout bearing is easy to change [other than pulling the tranny of course].

If youre gonna change the throwout bearing, you may as well change the clutch, right? I guess its not a big deal. I never had any problems with my old E30, and it made the noise with an M10, and its doing the same with the M20. So it makes me believe its the tranny or clutch, rather than engine. Its just kinda shitty sitting in drive thrus with your foot on the clutch because you dont wanna hear the sound lol.

But as far as an idler arm is concerned, it has to do with steering, absolutely not related to the clutch or tranny lol.

A idler arm is in cars/trucks with a steering box, not in those with a rack. Not normally anyway.

Ok, fucking craziness. I finally got the ride back today from German auto, where they did the tbelt/water pump. IT DOESNT FUCKING MAKE NOISE ANYMORE! I almost miss it.... But I dont.. Kinda trippy.
