Girlfriend wrecked her e30 - how easily do they total?

I guess it's unfair to say she wrecked it - she was at a stop sign and got rear ended by a hummer. it shattered the bumper and drivers side tail light - pushed in the tail panel a couple of inches on the drivers side (no 1/4 damage) and dented the trunklin pretty good. Sorry - but I'll have pics later. Does this sound like a total situation? I know if I get a quote it will be for a new bumper, new tail light, maybe a new trunklid, bodywork and paint. Isn't it something like if repairs are more than half the value of the car they total it? I'm not sure which I'd like to happen.

My first impulse was as follows:

"It's not bad at all - but it's totalled"

its definitly totalled. I had a 91 318i with 96k and i got my right rear tail and bumper crushed. they totalled it and sent me a check. Which i promptly spent on repair and mods.

would probably be totaled by the insurance... if its only the bumper, tail lights and trunk lid then go to the junkyard, pick up some tail lights from Abraham Motorsports and call it a day :D

The tail panel is pushed in pretty good.at least 2 inches at the deepest spot - looks like the rear valence got some damage too.

If they do total it and cut me a check - let's say I fix it - Will it have a salvage title?

Sorry to hear. Who cares if it gets a salvage title since you know exactly how it got it if you can get it fixed ? Unless of course you plan on selling it ...

I was able to negotiate with the insurance company on the last car I owned that was hit. I told them I did not want a marked title and they were OK with that.

That was many years ago, so I don't know these days, but it is worth a try.

                          She wants an e36, so.........

I'll probably buy it back and part it. I may try to see if i can buy it back without a salvage title and fix it - then i'd swap the 5 speed, baskets, and sport interior from my bronzit divingboard car and go...

Too labor intensive fix for the cost/dollar amount the insurance company makes off of it. So Totalled most likely.
