    Any thermodynamics experts nearby?

    I know it may be a longshot....but I really need some help. I have never had trouble in a class, but this class is giving me problems. I had some unusual things going on for a while and fell behind. Now I am lost! (Not to mention the teacher is a joke...but thats no excuse).

    Anyways, I go to the University of Tennessee....anyone know of a tutor nearby?

      There is nothing to do but lots of practice problems.

      I failed my first two tests in Thermo... but then aced the final two. And it may be one of my favorite classes I have taken now that I look back on it.

      Just work work work. Tutor... what about classmates?

        I struggled through it last quarter in my physics class (thermodynamics and DC and AC circuits) Still ended up with a C in the class thank god. Is there a tutorial center at your university? I know Western Washington University has a big center that has lots of tutors to give you a hand.

          Amen to that...the more problems you come into contact with the better you will understand the theory and steps involved in solving it correctly.

          Get one of your classmates to teach you the basics and then hit the books HARD...shitty class:blowup:

            awww come on... intro to thermo isnt so bad. But everyone is right, look at all the example problems and do as many practice problems you can. While you are solving the problems think to your self why you are doing each step. Having to explain your reasoning to yourself along the way will drive home the theory. If you have a few friends in the class ask to see their solutions and have them explain why they did each step.

              It isnt an intro class.


              Thx for the suggestions guys. I didnt do well at all on the first test, and there are only three tests during the semester. The second one is going to be tough too. I've got til Friday to do a ton of examples....guess that will be my route.

                  Thanks...I think Im going to need it. I cant explain why, but the material in this class has been a challenge for me. Like I said before, I have not had any troubles with previous material. I breezed through statics, dynamics, physics 1 & 2, Calc 1, 2, & 3....and I have made an A in every engineering related class up until this. Hopefully I can catch up. Worst case scenario, I'll just take the class again.

                      While you are doing the examples, write down detailed notes next to everything you do and highlight the formulas you used and write why you used them.

                      This method has got me through 4 thermo courses amongst others with great results.

                        In thermo or any engineering class, you must algorithmically organize your approach to problem solving. I generally write down the steps to solve each "class" of problem. Always, ALWAYS start at the BEGINNING (balance equations) and work your up from these. I can't tell you how many people miss basic insights trying to go too fast.
