    a/c woes

    anyone know what can cause an a/c to run at idle and not at rpm (>2000rpm)

    It was recently recharged (r12) after i installed it on my 318ic and has been doing this number just about since i got it back from the shop.

    any ideas?

    It could be one of the pressure sensors on the reciever/dryer. Put a voltmeter across one of them as you rev the engine and look for a change in voltage. They should both stay at ~12V the whole time. If they close and drop to 0, then you know what is shutting off the A/C.

      They may have overfilled it - resulting in the hi pressure switch cutting it off.

          If its been doing it since you got it back from the shop, take it back to them and tell them to fix it. It should have been right in the first place.

            Is the compressor cycling on and off the whole time while the car is at idle or are you saying that when you turn the A/C on, the engine fails to kick up to the higher idle or are you saying that above 2000 RPM the a/c compressor does not kick in at all?

              when i rev my motor with the compressor running the clutch kicks off and tries to kick back on from time to time for a few seconds and then shuts off again.

                sounds like a pressure issue to me, probably too high. I'd take it back to the shop and have them check it out. Or do the pressure swith test I outlined above.
