    Smoke...?

So I dropped the exhaust when I was replacing motor and tranny mounts and I think I screwed something up.

I drove it for no more than 5 min and smoke came billowing up from the engine. I think I might not have tightened the exhaust enough...

anyone else have any thoughts on this?

if it is exhaust, what do I torque the bolts to that go from shorty headers to exhaust?

    Thanks guys...

There are crush-gaskets there that may need to be replaced. You really need to tighten the shit out of 'em.

Billowing?! Could be something else. Any substances that got on the headers will also burn off when it gets hot the first few times.

yeah...penetrating bolt crap hopefully. I can see the smoke seeping out of shorties (maybe not billowing, I got carried away). I didn't see any washer or anything when removing it. Should there be a washer in between the short header and exhaust? Does anyone know the torque specs on those nuts? white smelly smoke scares me

        What color is again?

Yes there is a gasket from the headers to the downpipes. The torque isn't that much, maybe 10ft/lbs average.

the smoke is white/grey, but i can see it seeping out. I did NOT see any washer when I removed the header/exhaust which I might have missed or the "responsible" previous owner failed to put in

you just said you sprayed penetrating oil on the thing, give it some time to burn off...

if you have, then i dunno what to tell ya.

it might be an exhaust gasket

in my case with my 535i, i have an exhaust leak, no smoke or anything coming out but you can definantly tell that there is an exhaust leak just be hearing it. im not sure wether it wants a new gasket or something is loose or not making contact, but most likely it will be a gasket.

Ive never NOT had an exhaust smoke off a fresh install... If it doesnt go away (or substantially less anyway, after like 10-15 minutes, then start wondering what it should be.

If you didn't torque the exhaust stuff, you need to anyway, so do it.
If you didn't put in new gaskets, then, do that before you torque them. ;)
