Question on SHIFT KNOBS, screw-on vs. push-on???

I am debating on my purchase, I know have a screw-on knob. I want to buy the puch-on M-TECH knob but I am concerned how tight it would lock onto the metal rod. Do they have a snug-fit with no movement or would the move around when shifting???

    Thanks amigos!

In my experience, the oem push-on knobs fit pretty damn tight. Mine is a pain in the ass to pull off.

What did you do to your stock shifter to get a screw-on type?

      I thought there hadn't been screw-on's since the 2002.

My screw-on shift knob is an aftermarket piece where you have 3 little screws that lock the knob on the sides...with use of a hex key....Sean will be posting my car soon both exterior and interior shots.

          Ah.

I agree with Ken. The stock push-on knobs are a bitch to get off. You'll be fine.

if a press fit (OEM fit) knob is too loose, a little electrical tape will tighten it right up

Stock push/snap on knobs are superior. I know many people that have given themselves a bloody nose from the force required to remove it >>> as it flys up and hits you in the nose.

The hex screw ones SUCK. the screws are always in need of retightening.

just some info on takin off the OEM shifters...

                put it in 2 gear
get in the back seat of your car
get a firm girp and yank up
there is like no way it can hit you if u do that, cuase i have done it a bunch of times and it only took me one hard pull

or you could do it the easy way.

the knob does not require much force to get it off, you just need to give a quick, sharp pull upwards.

I agree with Jordan, it is a very good design.

You can put some vice-grips right below the knob and then use a small flat-head screw driver to pry it off.

For a brand new knob I put it in 4th and straddle the console sitting on the tranny tunnel. Pull up with both hands. your face is far away and your nuts are out of the direction of fire.

Ive done this on my brand new lighted-e36 knob but often fall back into the back footwells.
                            Im now E30less.

I took my friends e36 m3 knob because i bought him a new one for his b-day. Anyway mine is used and abused and will sometimes pop off when i throw a hard shift from 1st to 2nd. It makes me laugh everytime but also gets very annoying. It hasn't done it in a long time though.
