help with foam on the underside of hood!

So you know the foam that is on the underside of the hood? I believe its to keep the heat in the engine to not bubble the paint on the top of the hood. well anyways being it original from 91 it has been through some wear and tear and didnt look nice so i ripped it out and spent a whole day scarping all the sticky residue off. its as clean as i can get it but do i need foam there.. like is it necessary? because if it is I was thinking it'd be cool to substitute the foam for some thinner aluminum. It's heavier but would look nicer.

    so what doyou think?

Dynamat? I wouldn't do aluminum personally, sounds sorta tacky and might rattle against the hood... Plus it's not going to insulate against noise or heat.

both bavauto and bmp have kits.

can you post pics and a how-to you got the old crap off? The foam seems well glued on mine.

go to the pickapart and get an early style hood lining thingi. looks much better than the foam.

Were you one of the kids in the neighborhood that removed the stickers and streamers from his bigwheel too?

It's for sound deadening, not heat protection.
              You can do without.

wow, the stock foam cover thing under the hood is to protect the rest of the car if it catches aflame. The plastic caps that hold it to the hood melt and the cover falls onto the engine smothering the flame....

its a definite possibility, it probably isn't a recommended way but it works and didn't ruin the paint at all.
I just put a sheet over the engine bay and just starting ripping foam off. Which leaves all the residue then i soaked a cloth in lacquer thinner and just gave er' until it started lifting and rolling up in little ball things, then i would take a razorblade and carefully go along hte moistened section to remove the stuff. You need to go over each spot like 5 times at least to get it done, it takes a while but it was so worth it, it looks alot nicer under there now. Took me a couple days to do it( only a couple hours a day)
